I feel sorry for those kids.  I'm not sure the whole "shoplifting while in china" wasn't a way for the kid to try and get himself away from his father's plans for him.

Reminds me of that scene in Space Jam 2 where the Monstars steal Lonzo's jump shot.  And when the crowd runs for their lives, for fear of being hit by falling basketballs, Bugs takes out one of his trademark carrots and says, "Eh, ball don't lie!"

It's a pretty clever play on Lonzo's last name, which is Ball.

So, a father is going to take his kid into 'the hood' and ask randoms to "ball his son"?

Why has nobody contacted child protective services yet?

2017-12-11 10:31:41 AM
Two things: 1) his son is going to lose a lot of those pickup games, because he's not good; 2) he won't get any better at the things you need to be good at, such as team play and shooting technique.  I doubt some random guy on the corner is going to be providing the same level of instruction and criticism as Calipari.

I was just thinking about this on the way to work. Dad realizes that the way to get wealthy is by being a celebrity like the Kardashians. All publicity is good publicity.

I hope it all collapses because nobody wants the circus.

Terrible plan.  Most big cities have a couple of pickup games that are really elite and they aren't in the hood.  They're in a church, YMCA, or a gym. Pretty much required to have played or be playing college ball to get in there, aside from the sprinkling of NFL players in the offseason playing.  The Harbor Island YMCA game in Tampa comes to mind.  Played a game there once with Bob Sura and Anquan Boldin.

In case you haven't already noticed, that's his entire business plan.  Anything he does is geared toward making the reality show a...reality.  He knows that's the only way HE is assured a monster paycheck.  Any other crazy stunt should be written off as a loss-leader.

That's a good way to prepare him for an And 1 Mixtape tour (do they even do those any more?) but useless for the NBA

The shoplifting in China "kid" is 19.  He could tell his dad to go f himself, keep his scholarship and finish out a college degree at UCLA.  I feel sorry for the high schooler, he didn't really have any say in being homeschooled now.  That kid is going to have maybe a GED, no professional sports career and end up living off his oldest brother.

Yeah, this family is probably the Kardashians of the NBA. Hell, give them a fourth Ball sibling who wants to change their gender and play in the WNBA and we'd be full circle.

He is an adult, true, but if he's been under the thumb of his father, he may not have the courage to stand up to him, or he's might have been brainwashed into thinking that his father has it all figured out, and hasn't been allowed to think and achieve on his own.

Regardless, I think he's been raised by an abusive parent (mentally, if nothing else) and the poor adult is going to have to overcome some serious issues from it.

Well, first, Calipari teach his players how to be better? That's a laugh.

But I think the Balls were all going to UCLA before they all played for the Lakers. That was the plan.

The New Day was pretty good before Vince saw too many dollar signs with them.

Kevin Owens is still damn good as a heel though. Some PPV match this past year where he kept climbing out of the ring before things even started. The crowd was pissed but it was farking brilliant, he wasn't even wrestling and Owens had them in the palm of his hand.

But many people do want the circus, and somebody is really pushing them. I only occasionally watch basketball videos on YouTube (mostly instruction, not highlights or commentary) and my feed was completely inundated with Ball family videos when they first exploded. It took me a solid month of clicking 'not interested' to clear it out and even now I get a handful.

You can argue he's just lucky with the players he's chosen, but he's taken plenty of not quite super elite recruits that weren't high up on the early draft boards (like say 10-40 on the high school recruit rankings) and taken them to really good picks and NBA success.  Karl Towns was only like 15th in the high school ranking.  Nobody had Devin Booker as a one and done going into college.

Update: a team in Lithuania has signed them.  And Jeff Goodman has a funny tweet about it.

Just spoke to someone who is extremely familiar with Lithuanian basketball. Said this team is ideal for the Ball brothers - except for fact the coach doesn't speak English - because they play guys out of position, shoot a ton of 3's and don't defend. "It's a perfect match."

How many of those greats dropped out of high school and college (where the middle Ball brother wasn't expected to be more than a bit-part player)?  How many of those greats didn't go to college at all, but wound up in the NBA being successful and stars, as is LaVar's stated goal for all three kids?

Yes, LaVar is right! After all let's just name a few players who jumped straight from streetball to NBA:

...

...

Did Jason Williams play streetball?

/I bet more people come from streetball than the Lithuanian league

12 Lithuanians have played in the NBA.  11 if you remove Doma Sabonis, who was born in Portland while his Hall of Famer father was playing for the Trailblazers and whose only European experience is playing in Spain for two seasons as a teenager with no salary so he wouldn't screw up his college eligibility.

Rafer Alston is perhaps the most famous streetball player who has played in the NBA; but he also played 33 games at Fresno State.  So he wasn't really just a streetball player who made it to the NBA.  He actually had real organized basketball experience.
