Trump, then, is like anti-Christ?

The seven deadly sins:

1 Gula (gluttony)
2 Luxuria/Fornicatio (lust, fornication)
3 Avaritia (avarice/greed)
4 Superbia (pride, hubris)
5 Tristitia (sorrow/despair/despondency)
6 Ira (wrath)
7 Vanagloria (vainglory)
8 Acedia (sloth)

Trump can put a check mark on all these.  Perhaps the 'anti-Christ' isn't anything supernatural.  Trump is an example of completely ordinary human being with all our flaws, gifted with extraordinary power.

There's a parable in here somewhere playing out in real time.

TIL: Trump is so bad they had to expand the list to eight deadly sins.

/ The list you're looking for is pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth.
// I see you got your list from Wikipedia.  Unfortunately, it's about 1400 years out of date.
/// "In AD 590 Pope Gregory I revised this list to form the more common list. Gregory combined tristitia with acedia, and vanagloria with superbia, and added envy.[19][20] Gregory's list became the standard list of sins."

I would actually argue that Gluttony, Lust, Greed, and Vanity are all cut from the same cloth because they're about obsessing over the material world at the expense of the spiritual.  Pride- like it's cohorts Sloth, Wrath, and Sorrow- is all about obsession over emotion at the expense of the spiritual.

pride = every damned speech he makes (ie the best, bigly) coupled with his inability to apologize for anything
greed = sort of the definition of Trump and the prevailing motive for possible (probable) Putin collusion
lust = grab them by the you know where, amirite?
envy = what Obama had and represented, Trump needed to get and then tear down
gluttony = his 2500 calorie days
wrath = books written describing his tantrums
sloth = golf, his "fluid schedule"

I think when you view each of these in the context of everyday vices, a lot of us may exhibit some of these things. maybe a few of us incorrigibles show off the entire list at some point or another. but when thinking about 7 DEADLY sins, think in terms of the vice as a driving force to commit a terrible act.
For Trump, though he exhibits wrath, gluttony, and sloth, none of these are shown to be big ticket deadly sins by him (although his sloth makes him a shiatty president). His greed and lust however are enough to damn him. If the accusations are true, he's committed quite a few heinous acts against women in the past, and the greed still shows with how he continues to prop up his family's wealth by subverting the office of presidency. These would rank high enough to be deadly sins. But the whoppers, pride and envy, tearing down a nation because of what a rival had and mocked you for not having, coupled with demanding adulation and subverting laws to prop oneself as a king... that's biblical.

Why are we still talking about what kind of person Donald Trump is?
We know what kind of person Donald Trump is.
The majority of his followers cheerfully admit what kind of person he is - hell, they brag about it.
The only question is how quickly his mental state is deteriorating, and how soon he can be removed.
I think we are stuck with him until 2020, or until some cardiovascular or cerebral cricis intervenes.

Funny enough it actually depends on the list. There's more than one lost of seven deadly sins, and there's 8 or 9 across the set of them.

Donald Trump could not be less Christ-like if he tried. Which makes him perfectly suited to lead the "Conservative Christians" in the GOP, as their beliefs have nothing to do with Jesus either.

Despair was on the original list; Sloth replaced it a few centuries later.

Though calling it "the" list is a bit disingenuous. There are several lists of sins in the Bible, including a few that are seven items long, but none that match up well with this list, which was a later creation.

More or less.  Just to give the Trumpers less reason to Deify their man-child god, more than they already have.

George Carlin also suggested that for capital punishment cases.. and put them on TV.

I used to think that that all of the Sins except for Pride are excesses of appetite, and thus technically the same thing, and that Pride fuels these excesses, and thus was the only truly deady sin. Recent events have revised my ideas about Greed.

FTA: In fact, when it comes to some of Christianity's most fundamental teachings, Donald Trump has long acted in a manner that contravenes virtually all Christian admonitions.

In other words, he's a typical Christian.

2017-12-11 08:09:41 AM
According to many (I would say most) Christian sects, God is the ultimate narcissist. It's right there in the first question of the Westminster Catechism:

Q. 1. What is the chief end of man?
A. Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

God created all of humanity, (and arguably all of the universe,) so that he could be glorified and praised. Jesus gets a whole lot of shout-outs in this department, too. In John's acid-trip of a book at the end of the New Testament, all of the immortal elders and chimeric creatures around the throne room of heaven go on and on about a vision of a wounded lamb, representing Jesus, saying things like:

"Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"

(As I recall, God doing whatever brings himself the most glory is also a central tenet of Calvinism, which gets a little messed up when you realize that this also means that God predestined a huge number of people to go to Hell, simply because it makes him look good.)

Taking all this into account, the motivations of God and Donald Trump are not actually that different. Trump's hubris is considered wrong in Christian circles because Donald Trump is not powerful enough to create reality and morality as he wills it, and therefore Trump is not worthy to operate with self-promotion as his primary motivation. God is.

WARNING! WARNING! REAL POETRY! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Poem FTA:

Archaic Torso of Apollo
Rainer Maria Rilke, 1875 - 1926

We cannot know his legendary head
with eyes like ripening fruit. And yet his torso
is still suffused with brilliance from inside,
like a lamp, in which his gaze, now turned to low,

gleams in all its power. Otherwise
the curved breast could not dazzle you so, nor could
a smile run through the placid hips and thighs
to that dark center where procreation flared.

Otherwise this stone would seem defaced
beneath the translucent cascade of the shoulders
and would not glisten like a wild beast's fur:

would not, from all the borders of itself,
burst like a star: for here there is no place
that does not see you. You must change your life.

From Hellfire and Wormwood he can't hide!

Supralapsarian Calvinists.

When England dumped her bare-assed Jacobite rebels into penal colonies and exile, with their brimstone and fire Presbyterian preachers, she founded a second New England. A New England not of freedom, town councils, charity, education, noblesse oblige, and transcendentalism, a New England that did not turn liberal and democratic in it's old age. A New England where the White Trash of the UK and Middle Europa turned into the Upper Classes of the Deep South and West, turned into White Trash writ large.

The cousins of these Trumpwea Dumped into the New Jerusalem of the Wildnerness, called Pandemonium after its model, wear their ASBOs in the UK like badges of honour, like Boy Scout badges used to be worn, they strut their vileness as Neo-Nazis across the Continent from Paris to Moscow. But they are billionaires now, and thus the evil is piled higher and deeper, like the filthy lucre.
