In WWII, the US signed a neutrality agreement with two fascist nations (Portugal and Spain) and were allied with another (Brazil).

Both were major coups -- the Spanish treaty prevented the Axis from closing the Straits of Gibraltar and Brazil provided a southern route into Africa and kept Germany from linking up by sea with Japan.

Amen, my uncle died there too, he is on the Arizona memorial, but since FARK has decided to abandon all class and mock those that died....

You'll appreciate this then, Joe George is finally getting a medal for helping rescue 6 men from the burning USS Arizona.

Well overdue, my uncles berth was in the forward gunners mate berthing near turret 1, his body is still there, no one escaped the forward part of the ship, waiting on a flight to Hawaii atm to attend a private wreath laying ceremony tonight, I was.....dismayed.... by the way FARK decided to remember this day

Same day they invaded the Philippines. My grandparents took the kids and fled the cities.  The women were especially concerned as the Japanese soldiers had a taste for the pretty girls.  Later on some Japanese officers decided to stay as "permanent guests" at my grand uncle's house, presumably kicking them out (they were officers of a propaganda filming unit).

And my grandmother who is a hundred next year who is still quite sharp can still count in Japanese, knows a handful of useful Japanese words (thanks to mandatory Japanese lessons at school) and can tell you about life in charming occupied territory like it was yesterday.  One of her memories was remembering to bow real low to the sentries when you walk past least they get pissed at you and stick you with a bayonet.

As long as the Russians didn't collapse, the Germans would have been hard pressed to hold their empire indefinitely. Even with a subdued Great Britain, the British Empire would've continued fighting overseas with American material support, and Russians would've kept bleeding the Germans dry in Eastern Europe.

Without the 8th air force destroying their synthetic oil production or bombing their people the war in the east would have been a lot different.
The red army would have been facing at least twice the numbers of luftwaffe assets and probably that many more AA guns, a lot of which were 88s and 105s.
Plus lots more soldiers and supplies.
With lend lease delayed or non existent, they would have lost most likely.
To quote nikita kruschev : we made jokes about spam, but without it we would have starved.

I work right across the street from the memorial and I see it every day - I remember why it's there.

They were only kind of our allie in that they were fighting against Germany but they were only doing it because they were pissed at Hitler for double crossing them.

The National World War II museum did a nice series of videos with several historians last year for the 75th anniversary. Well worth checking out.

Such is the nature of Fark.  If I could suggest some reading, the Arizona Republic profiled every then living Arizona survivor in 2014.  Some really amazing stories in there, including a number post-Pearl Harbor.

I wish you well on your trip, that's got to be an incredibly emotional thing to do.  I can get worked up just watching the videos of interring a survivor's ashes into the ship.

Battle of Britain was in 1940.

Germany never really had the sea lift capability for Sea Lion.

\Really, until the Pacific campaigns, most observers doubted anyone had that capability
\\Gallipoli had convinced most people it couldn't be done

The Soviets and the Germans were itching for a fight. From what I gather they'd have gone to war sooner or later, even if Hitler hadn't invaded in '41. They were both led by despotic madmen, sure, but if anything that made them natural enemies, not natural allies. Hitler hated commies more than Reagan.

If it happened today...

Hawaii is a blue state, so Boss Tweet would immediately complain that the Hawaiians expected the Feds to do all the defense work for them. He'd give rebuilding contracts to his cronies and then brag that the "President of Hawaii" told him he's doing a tremendous job, believe me.
