Like so many major historical events, this was surrounded by conspiracy theories.

Did FDR know in advance?

Where did the supplies come from?

Was this being considered as revenge for some slight?

The truth is, we will probably never know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, exactly why Amelia Earhart bombed Pearl Bailey.

The supplies came from not knowing when the attack was going to come, or where.  This is rudicrous question.

In WWII, the US signed a neutrality agreement with two fascist nations (Portugal and Spain) and were allied with another (Brazil).

Both were major coups -- the Spanish treaty prevented the Axis from closing the Straits of Gibraltar and Brazil provided a southern route into Africa and kept Germany from linking up by sea with Japan.

Don't forget that the Russians were our allies in World War 2!  They would never do anything to hurt us, so even if there was collusion it's not like they didn't have our best interests at heart.

What we should be suspicious of are the Japanese.  They're not even shooting North Korea's missiles out of the sky!  Whose side are they really on?

Same day they invaded the Philippines. My grandparents took the kids and fled the cities.  The women were especially concerned as the Japanese soldiers had a taste for the pretty girls.  Later on some Japanese officers decided to stay as "permanent guests" at my grand uncle's house, presumably kicking them out (they were officers of a propaganda filming unit).

And my grandmother who is a hundred next year who is still quite sharp can still count in Japanese, knows a handful of useful Japanese words (thanks to mandatory Japanese lessons at school) and can tell you about life in charming occupied territory like it was yesterday.  One of her memories was remembering to bow real low to the sentries when you walk past least they get pissed at you and stick you with a bayonet.

Such is the nature of Fark.  If I could suggest some reading, the Arizona Republic profiled every then living Arizona survivor in 2014.  Some really amazing stories in there, including a number post-Pearl Harbor.

I wish you well on your trip, that's got to be an incredibly emotional thing to do.  I can get worked up just watching the videos of interring a survivor's ashes into the ship.

They wargamed Sea Lion at Sandhurst (the UK's equivalent of West Point) back in the 1974, it didn't go well for the Germans.  James Hornfischer has some numbers about the Pacific.

Without the 8th air force destroying their synthetic oil production or bombing their people the war in the east would have been a lot different.
The red army would have been facing at least twice the numbers of luftwaffe assets and probably that many more AA guns, a lot of which were 88s and 105s.
Plus lots more soldiers and supplies.
With lend lease delayed or non existent, they would have lost most likely.

Had the Germans waited until '42 to invade the Soviets then a lot changes, we could've asked the to invade Manchukuo in '41 which would've devastated Japan's industrial capabilities early, not to mention the Germans likely don't gain nearly as much territory as they did in '41. The Germans dd switch to a total war economy in '42 but only after the defeat at Moscow and the US entering the war, so that aspect doesn't change.

vsavatar: Well since I know it was the Japanese who bombed Pearl Harbor, I'm sure there's a reference or joke in there I'm missing. Anyone care to point it out?

On a related note... too soon.

Also, Hawaii wasn't a state until 18 years later

My long deceased high school principal was flying his plane when the attack occurred.  He was shot down and lived to tell the tale.
My high school biology teacher was a medic at Pearl  Harbor and was there during the attack. He was busy that day.
Just a coincidence  that they both, decades later,  worked at the same school.

In an interview I read somewhere, John Finn, one of the December 7, 1941 Medal of Honor recipients complains that the Japanese attack interfered with his morning activities with his wife.  Which is what made him so mad and fight so bravely: "Those SOBs messed up my nookie"

Maybe. But it's more likely he would have blamed some middle east country.

"On this day, 76 years ago, the Iranian infantry sent their Jets to bomb out ships. And it's a shame. We had some great ships, believe me. But because Obama and the democrats are weak, They were able to get through our defenses , which were a joke until I took over, and attack American, and our great ships. They're really great aren't they?

Under my Presidency, we now have invisible ships, and the best defenses. The best ships and defenses, believe me. No one has ever seen ships and defenses like these. Since I took office, we have increased the number of ships ten fold. Our Navy has never be stronger, believe me!"

AOW: starlost: my grandfather died during the attack so fark you you farkers
miss you every day grandpa yuto datsun

Amen, my uncle died there too, he is on the Arizona memorial, but since FARK has decided to abandon all class and mock those that died....

Welcome to Fark. Anyway, the events on this day hit my family (while I was growing up) rather hard. There was no television in 1941, of course, only newsreels in theaters. The only immediate information was radio, for which my father was trained.

Imagine the shock to those living in the 48 states when they learned that members of the Japanese government were in Washington pretending to negotiate for peace, while their military (as known to the Japanese negotiators) were mobilized for a surprise attack on US ships and airplanes.

Here is a reasonably accurate radio rebroadcast with newsreel visuals.

RJReves:

Did FDR know in advance?

FDR did not know, but the rumors persist that Churchill knew and wanted America to join the war.

Where did the supplies come from?
The supply cabinet.

Was this being considered as revenge for some slight?

Actually the US did piss off Japan. Japan and America were trading partners (US helped modernize japan by importing copper, steel and oil). However Japan wanted its own resources, so it attack China and other parts of Asia to follow the "colonization" policies of the West.
America wasn't cool with this and cut off their sales to Japan.

My grand uncle was at Pearl Harbor. The only thing he said of that day "All we could do was stack the bodies"
