(US Army)   US Army Mad Scientist Initiative (a real thing) warns that, for autonomous robotic soldiers of the future to be effective, they have to be smart enough to ask, "why do I have to die for you meatbags?" in addition to "Where is Sarah Connor?"   ( madsciblog.tradoc.army.mil) divider line

I mean, you could give them a sense of honor. But then we'd have trouble explaining why we keep electing a bunch of dishonorable dickbags to represent us. But that's just me.

An AI "unit" that does not have a stake in the outcome of its findings is just a really complicated pin ball machine.

Just tell them they don't die and send them on their way.

I figured that for them to be effective you just had to send wave after wave of them, and to be sure to disable their preset kill limit.

Look, there's no need to go all AI with them. Just program them to activate certain accessories when a legal target (estimated size, heat signature, movement patterns, etc) is identified. Put transponders on friendlies to identify disallowed targets.

This of course is a method of total war, which for some reason we seem to shy away from these days. But that's a choice to limit our capabilities based on the premise that a war can be made humane, which sounds like a nice thing to do until you realize that it still results in thousands of deaths, widespread PTSD in survivors and the destruction of a country's infrastructure.

WW1 and WW2 are still within living memory, that's why. We've stepped far enough into the abyss to know we don't want to go back there.

Total war is bean-counters' war. The people who plan it aren't the people who have to fight it.

This - You dont want a lethal AI. You want a murder  robot. There is a difference. Any army robot with a sense of self preservation that goes beyond 'dont wander into open fire unless im commanded to' has gone awry. You dont want it to think. You want it to kill. Trying to program AI to deal with philosophical concepts humans only have a brief and tenuous grasp of is stupid and then stupid again. Soldiers that think is the whole reason people want to make killing robots.

Someone joked about a pre-set kill limit. (i get the joke btw) Its not a bad idea. The robot identifies and executes a max number of targets and then self destructs. They could be fired into enemy territory with artillery or air dropped or even dropped  from space. The idea would be that they are just there to fark stuff up based on some preset algorithm and once they had done a certain level of damage their electronics would be melted with thermite and they would detonate like a claymore.

Robots are not soldiers and they should not be treated or designed like such. They should be murder robots. Not computerized soldiers.

The article basically asks - how do you deal with an AI who you had to dumb down and then re smarten. WTF. Why would you do that? Why bother? Why not just reboot the farking thing? Why give the robot awareness of its persistence in the first place? Its job is basically to die. If you have ethical qualms about killing it then maybe creating lethal AI isn't for you anyways.

robots designed for self-preservation is the theme of most sci-fi horror movies.  Don't these guys watch movies?
