from the looks of things in that video, isn't it more of Batman Samurai than Ninja?

I mean thematically he fits more Ninja, but the armor and everything else looked more Samurai to my untrained eye.

I would too, if it wasn't this form of 3D cgi-ish animation this and other animes have (like a lot of them that are on Netflix). I find it somewhat off-putting.

Watch One Punch Man then. Not only is it great satire the animation style seems to be whatever they feel like for any given scene.

I think I'd watch this and then be angry that it's so over-the-top when a more understated story with more relatable stakes could have been so much cooler.

I'd still watch it though.

Yeah, i don't know how to describe that style of anime.

A couple things.

1. Batman clearly said that he represents the samurai ethos. This is from "Day of the Samurai" where he battles a "ninja" named Kyodai. I'm going to take Batman at his word rather than try to second guess whether he's actually more ninja-like than samurai-like.

2. I never took the Joker to be especially good at hand to hand fighting or even particularly skilled at swordplay. Guns, sure. Trickery, of course. Goons, galore. But Batman and Joker going head to head with swords? Come on.

That is part of the fun though

One Punch Man is amazing.  But I think the fight against the mole people was better in terms of over the top animation.  But then again it didn't involve punch shockwaves parting clouds...

Well for instance, you mentioned Netflix.... I believe the Voltron series they have there is a blend of CGI/3D with 2D.... like, when they cut away to the robot shots, its a three dimensional model. but then the basic character shots are just 2D.

If i recall, DC's The Dark Knight Returns animation.... i think they threw a few 3D models in, here and there, like car chases, and what not......

I definitely prefer 2D, but some scenes, would be needlessly cumbersome to animate in lieu of using 3D models.

Every movie is a "cheap ripoff" of something.  Considering how badass ninja scroll is, does really bother you that a modern movie is based on it?

Trying to explain OPM to my wife was interesting.

"Why is that guy naked?"
"When he flexes his clothes rip off."
"Yeah but I mean...WHY?"
"Well this show is a parody of a type of show that almost always sexes up female characters for no reason"
"And you watch those shows too?"

This thing was written and produced by some of the people that also did the old Jo-Jo's Bizarre Adventure. For that reason alone I'll give it a shot.

In that there are ninja, samurai, hot lady ninjas all in feudal Japan sure. Other than that I think you are reading too much into the trailer of a movie.

I saw more Jo-Jo in it, since some of the creative team made Jo-Jo as well it would make sense.

Count me as one more endorsement of One Punch Man. I love it. It's making fun of over the top anime tropes while also doing them really well... It doesn't take itself seriously, without getting too dumb, and it's just plain a lot of fun.

When Japan is in a state of chaos like a mass of hemp,

2017-12-01 10:13:50 PM

Farker Soze: When Japan is in a state of chaos like a mass of hemp,

Hemp has an important function in the mythology of Shinto, the "Way of the Gods," as the ancient indigenous religion of Japan is known. Hemp was used to purify, to drive out evil (exorcism). Hemp seeds were used in Shinto marriage ceremonies. In some ceremonies hemp leaves were burnt as an "invitation to the spirits."  Even today there are shinto ceremonies at major shrines such as Ise Jingu in Mie prefecture and other shrines that involve the burning of taima (marijuana).

The priests' clothes were made from hemp linen and and bell ropes in shrines were made from hemp too. Hemp for bell ropes is still grown in Nagano prefecture today. Several hemp fields are cultivated on Shikoku (one of the four main islands of Japan) to make ceremonial linen clothes for the Imperial family and for Shinto priests.
