ive been there, its actually pretty neat
2002-01-13 10:08:29 PM
we have those too... i thinkwe call them "lighthouses" or something
2002-01-13 10:10:51 PM
It actually looks like a nice peacefull place.
2002-01-13 10:11:04 PM
I've seen weirder.........World's Largest Prarie Dog in western kansas....I can't remember how big they said it was a horse or cow i think.
2002-01-13 10:12:46 PM
Been there, saw my friend have a break down in the infinity room...

Also wanted to rip the music machine apart in the whale room.
2002-01-13 10:13:33 PM
I've been there. Nothing like it, anywhere in the world. It takes at least six hours to see the whole thing, and that's moving fast...
2002-01-13 10:14:51 PM
Took me 8 hours.
2002-01-13 10:15:43 PM
Life-size mechanical orchestras, with mannequins playing real instruments, all automated. Homemade guns, from beautiful to silly (an 18-barrel pistol?)
2002-01-13 10:16:54 PM
If you're thinking of going there, don't look at the photos, and don't read the descriptions, just go. Words and photos do nothing in the way of describing the place.
2002-01-13 10:17:45 PM
Looks awesome, without scrolling through all those tiny thumbnails - whatcha think, I don't have anything better to do?? Oh, that's right - I AM on Fark. Never mind..
2002-01-13 10:18:35 PM
And wear comfortable shoes.

For those who haven't read the article (or haven't waded through the whole info), this house was created by a man named Alex Jordan, who loved collecting things. All sorts of things, particularly carousels and automated instruments. He built a house on a rock, up on a mountain. One room juts out over space, with big windows pointing down. Others are built into the mountains.

Way cool.
2002-01-13 10:21:17 PM
My friend thought the infinity room was going to fall off the cliff.

Alex must have been my height or shorter, you have to duck alot in the actual "house" portion.
2002-01-13 10:22:08 PM
Maybe they should have flown a plane into this place.
2002-01-13 10:22:26 PM
For some reason that website makes the place look really creepy. Maybe I'm just tired, but I feel strangely disturbed by having visited that site and looked at some of those pictures. I wanna go there!!!!
2002-01-13 10:23:34 PM
Would have only destroyed the top part, I believe most of it is underground.
2002-01-13 10:23:48 PM
This was the tourist trap in American Gods, right?
2002-01-13 10:25:10 PM
Site is getting farked, really slow to load...

2002-01-13 10:25:12 PM
Holy crap - that place is about as gaudy as it gets.
2002-01-13 10:26:09 PM
Well duh, it's in Wisconsin...
2002-01-13 10:26:14 PM
I remember going into the infinity room after smoking mass ammounts of "happy smoke". My depth perception was really off and I remember staring down that "long" hallway for about 15 minutes straight, trying to determine how the hell they guy did it.
2002-01-13 10:26:48 PM
tourist trap? i dunno. different? hellz yea. i have to admit, i'd contemplate visiting if it were in my locale. i'm all the way out in new friggin york so things like this are waaaay too far for me to just "take a leisurely drive" to. *shrug*
ok, enough of m0p's opinion, shaddup already m0p, quit biatchin!
(so "the others" don't have to do it)
2002-01-13 10:27:44 PM
Id go and see it just because it looks so strange and interesting... guess i've always been a sucker for checking out weird stuff though. Looks pretty huge!

Oh yeah.. i dont look like a cheap porn star do I?
2002-01-13 10:32:15 PM
Nah, more like a GAY porn star.

2002-01-13 10:35:04 PM
Good, at least that means im not cheap :))

Oh yeah... that'll be $250 fetus.
2002-01-13 10:35:38 PM
Don't mess with anything in, or from, Wisconsin.
This includes the Green Bay Packers.
2002-01-13 10:35:45 PM
Sheseala: Well duh, at least we got something intresting to go with the Octagon House in Watertown :-P
2002-01-13 10:36:44 PM
I've been there, it takes at least 6 - 8 hours but it is worth it. By viewing all of the artifacts there I learned about as much about US History as I did in 4 years of High School. Definatly recommend it.
2002-01-13 10:39:40 PM
Caustic, it is indeed the site of the climax of American Gods.
2002-01-13 10:39:51 PM
During a cross country trip we planned our route so we could see The House on the Rock. The place is unbelieveable. I can't even begin to describe the incredible amount of shiat this guy collected from around the world. The largest indoor merry-go-round was really farking creepy. I recommend every American check the place out.
2002-01-13 10:40:37 PM
He started building the house on the rock because he wanted to. Soon, so many people were coming to see it and talk with him, he couldn't get any work done. So he put up a sign saying you had to pay money to get in. People still came, and paid the admission. Soon he was making a lot of money. He didn't need the money so he put it all into building and collecting more stuff, which drew more people, which made more money, and the whole thing kind of snowballed.
2002-01-13 10:41:08 PM
Looks like it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright...just an observation...
2002-01-13 10:41:38 PM
I just submitted another weird attraction...It's also in Wisconsin.

2002-01-13 10:42:18 PM
Mizzou: Your post reminds me of a saying on a shirt I saw last summer: "I have two favorite football teams. The Vikings, and whoever is playing the Packers."
2002-01-13 10:46:13 PM
very cool place to go, but it definetely takes an entire day. it's also pretty expensive.

go packers!! :)
2002-01-13 10:48:23 PM
O5iiawah: Interestingcomment. There is a Frank Lloyd Wright house very near the House on the Rock. It's a nice scenic area of the midwest.
2002-01-13 10:49:17 PM
Ive been there twice and want to go again because both times I was there they were still adding things to it. Its very expensive for a house tour but its really amazing if your ever in the Area definately check it out you will want a house just like it when you leave.
2002-01-13 10:50:52 PM
Oh Yeah., I forgot....... GO PACKERS!!!
2002-01-13 11:03:17 PM
I've been there too. It wasn't NEARLY as disappointing as Wall Drug was. I mean, Christ, there were signs for that place once I left my driveway. Once I finally got there, it was so boring that I left after a half hour.
2002-01-13 11:06:54 PM
Has American Gods already been made into a movie? I've got to get out more. HOTR is *the* roadside ultimate tourist attraction. Traveling this week, and I just watched a special about hot dogs on PBS.

Wisconsin, home of Packers, cheeseheads, fallen angels, serial killers, gaudy attractions, strange weather, 70's show, etc.....
2002-01-13 11:17:17 PM
"House on the Rock" in : "The people who came up with this idea were smoking crack!"
2002-01-13 11:19:42 PM
Then again, I grew up down the street from this thing :
[image from too old to be available]
so what do I know ?
2002-01-13 11:24:07 PM
World's largest Carousel! Doll Collection! THIS PLACE HAS EVERYTHING!!!
2002-01-13 11:27:45 PM
I don't know. Looking at the picture of the Amazing Music Machine, I saw the man that turned the little boy into a grown-up Tom Hanks. No thanks.
2002-01-13 11:28:43 PM
Looks like my worst nightmare!!! Actually it would be worse if they had the little people from the Autin Powers: Goldmember trailer there also!
2002-01-13 11:34:05 PM
Of all the Wisconsin tourism attractions, House on the Rock is pretty normal.. It's actually just a short drive from one of Frank Lloyd Wright's homes.
Wierd WI tourism spots include things like GIANT SNUFF CAN ANIMAL STATUES!
2002-01-13 11:37:15 PM
There's Igor the Fennimore Mouse and the unnamed Boscobel Turkey.

I'm in Platteville, home of the world's largerst "M".
2002-01-13 11:38:52 PM
Neil Gaiman is a god. Read American Gods . If I am not completely chroniced-out this was in the book.
