Picking the "best boxed wine" is like picking the "smartest White House official." Even at the top of the ranking, it still pretty much sucks.

The best are the ones in the juice box sized boxes. Little league games, soccer practice, family picnics. These little things make life livable.

I hate boxed wine.  The corkscrew makes such a mess.

I have to disagree with you, here. I've had some good boxed wines. There was an incredible one (Clos Alpha, if I remember correctly) in the 90s that you could buy in a box in Chile, and couldn't find for love nor money here in the U.S.

A cork and a bottle don't make a good wine. Good grapes, good soil, and good vintners make a good wine. I'm not a wine snob, but I know what I like in flavors, and the Chileans and Californians taught us a long time ago that the French just don't make the best wines anymore. I've taken a big, 8-dollar, 1.5-litre bottle of Concha Y Toro Cab/Merlot blend to parties, and it's almost always the first bottle finished -- not because it's anything special or rare, but because it's delicious. Let it breathe for 20 minutes and it's wonderful. I've never taken Franzia to a party, but not because it comes in a box -- but because it tastes awful.

Don't let the price tag or even the container fool you. I had a boyfriend from Perú who was a professional chef (now lives in Vancouver, BC, Canada) who taught me that you judge a wine like a person -- on their merits; not their name or what they're wearing.

You sound like a person who has never had Bota Box cab.

There's nothing inherently wrong with boxed wine from the container point of view. In fact, boxed wine avoids oxidation problems that damage other wines. If for some reason the box contains wine that needs to breath, you can always pass it through the intermediate of a decanter but often as not just dropping the glass some as you pour and then giving it a few minutes is enough to clear out any reductive character. A proper copper penny works too.

Cab Sav is the worst Black Box.  Try the Merlot.

Boca's not bad.

No oenophile but I am cheap, used to have the Franzia cab with dinner. Got the Vella once, never again.

You might be surprised.  Plus it's nice to have red wine on tap, right on top of your fridge.

I had a glass of their Malbec last night.  Very nice.
