In North Korea, cell phone charges you!

/has no idea what that means.

2004-06-03 04:39:20 PM
untill we get that whole time travel thing down, N.Korea and the Arab world are our only means of "going back in time"

2004-06-03 04:39:38 PM
Sand? You had SAND? All we had back in the day was ground glass. And we LIKED it.

Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

Blue Hawaii boat drinks sound good.

You guys all had it easy. We had to eat our own teeth.

How did we chew the teeth, you ask?

Well, that's the question now, isn't it?

2004-06-03 04:42:46 PM
Sorry, NK, you're too late. The infection of your country
has begun...

Kim Jong - "Can you hear me now?"

2004-06-03 04:45:20 PM
Pinecones? All we had was a spot on a puddle of boiling lava, with no shelter from anything at all. And WE would have been THRILLED to have anything to eat at all. Instead of eating, a pack of rabid wolves would come and eat US every night. And of course we LIKED it, so our father would beat us to death sixty times a day for liking it. And we liked that, too.

For those of you making snide remarks about drivers in NK on cell phones consider this. Most people in NK can't afford a car and the ones that can still aren't allowed to own one. They invited journalists in to show off their new modern highway that goes from the north end of the country to the south end. The first question that came to everyones minds was why? Citizens aren't allowed to own cars. Most people in the country are extremely poor and their idiot leader decided to spend money on a highway.

Consider that the next time you decide to complain about the stupidity of your own government.

i think i'm the only one who made snide remarks about korean drivers, and in fact i thought carefully about everything you mentioned right before i posted

For those of you who know true history of Japan, and how they are now, wouldnt it be best for the entire world for the US (allies) to kick North Koreas ass and turn them into another Japan?

2004-06-03 04:48:28 PM
Boy, those North Koreans sure are crazy.

2004-06-03 04:39:20 PM PatRIOTactORforceablesodimy

How is traveling to "the Arab world" going back in time? Most Arabs have cellphones (even in that crazy place called Palestine), televisions, radios, computers, microwaves, and even the Internet. Were you unaware because you have never travelled to an Arab country, or are you a racist?

2004-06-03 04:48:31 PM
Sand? Rocks? Ice? Pauly Shore?

All I had was a vacuum... and well... a cell phone... the phone made it worthwhile though, poor Koreans.

2004-06-03 04:50:02 PM
It's all a joke, Kim Jong Il is one day going to smile and tell us it was a big hoax to see how gullible we dumb Westerners can really be -- right? There's no other explanation for such looniness:

I can see that....

If you want to read a great journal about one man's trip to N. Korea, check out http://www.simonbone.com . He went there in 1998 or so and makes some very, very scary observations.

It is my belief that it is impossible for someone to live under such a restrictive regime and NOT become delusional and paranoid. When we roll into there (it will happen; don't kid yourself), it's going to make Okinawa and Iwo Jima look like picnics.

2004-06-03 04:56:58 PM
Well, at least they won't be plagued by the constant television, newspaper and billboard ads of Catherine Zeta Jones hawking T-mobile. That, and the "can you hear me now" guy. About as annoying as the "dude you're getting a DELL" guy.

I guess they wouldn't anyways, if televisions are illegal, newspapers are state controlled and there's only a militart transport highway for roadside billboards. Still, better to be safe than sorry, right?

2004-06-03 04:57:56 PM
I can't even imagine the horror stories we are going to hear once the North Koreans get a real government...assuming they ever do.

2004-06-03 04:59:10 PM
To add another cool trip journal, check this out. More recent, in 2002. Lots of photos taken subversively, lots of very interesting conversations and some close calls. I read the whole thing.

All things that ring are now banned!

2004-06-03 05:00:15 PM
mryoop, I've been there. North Korea is a terrible place, and that is not a lie.

There are many ways to confirm this. Look at the gate gaurd on the border for differences in height. Look at satellite images of North Korea at night. credible agencies conservatively estimate that 1 in 7 North Koreans died of starvation in the past decade.

It's worse than you can imagine. Why can't people leave that country at will? Why do they not allow people to see their society?

That its a bit hard to go there and see this truth is compelling evidence in and of itself.

I agree. The worlds soiled-panty-veding-machine production could be double what it is now.

even in that crazy place called Palestine

Palestine! Theres no stinking Palestine, just Palestinians.

The ban doesn't seem to be mentioned on North Korea's News Site

Sounds like the Jongster picked up Kerry's anti-nuclear terrorism plan and applied it at home:

1) Take away the cell phones
2) People can't communicate with outside world or coordinate rebellions with each other
3) Freedom is averted!!

Liberals are advised to ignore this story and repeat the following mantra: "They choose to live as slaves. They don't need anyone's help. Who are we to judge their socialist Utopia?"

Would it unbunch your panties if I called it "the occupied territories," or some other ostensible name?

2004-06-03 05:07:10 PM
I'd read a slightly different take on why they banned the phones. The NK government is now apparently saying that the massive train explosion last month was an assasination attempt, planned by cell phone.

With these guys, it's hard to be sure if that's true or just what they released for public consumption.

There has never been a Palestine to occupy, just one of those funny little facts of History that is ignored.

2004-06-03 05:10:00 PM
This doesn't make a whole lot of sense in that it takes recievers to make cell phones work, they aren't like walkie-talkies. If N Korea wanted to stop cell phones, they could simply turn off the cell sites in their country. The signal isn't that powerful, that is why the nodes are all over the place.

That's horrible. NK is one of those countries that I forget to pay attention to, current events wise.

These should be banned globally.

All right! Let's all hear it for communism!

If only we stupid Americans would wake up and fix our country by applying the fantastic techniques perfected by the Soviet Union, China, and North Korea...

2004-06-03 05:16:49 PM
Ironically, this is a right-wing idea: forcing the people to conform to a set of artificially imposed morals or behavior standard is typically right-wing. North Korea seems to try to incorporate the worst of the right and the left. Of course, North Korea is not now and never was a communist country. There has never been a communist nation.

Real, actual communism works well, but only if it is completely voluntary (which in turn means that actual communist societies are very small, since only a very tiny percent of people are non-materialistic.)

Less cell phone, more cowbell (inspired by UncleBuck4U)

Yes, it must be completely voluntary. That's exactly why it should never be considered as a viable form of government.

I'm not an expert or anything, but maybe Merriam-Webster online can help out your little debate:

Palestine
Pronunciation: 'pa-l&-"stIn
Variant(s): or Latin Palaestina /"pa-l&-'stE-n&, -'stI-/
Usage: geographical name
1 ancient region SW Asia bordering on E coast of the Mediterranean & extending E of Jordan River
2 former country bordering on the Mediterranean on W & Dead Sea on E; a part of the Ottoman Empire 1516-1917, a British mandate 1923-48; now approximately coextensive with Israel with Arab Palestinians in the West Bank having limited self-rule since 1993
