so Trump announces his intention to deport a ton of people....during thanksgiving.

I wonder if anyone's told him yet that doing this probably won't get him the ratings he's looking for.....?  deporting immigrants during a holiday where american mythology says we traditionally THANK native tribes for helping the pilgrims survive a harsh winter kinda looks....not good.  "hey thanks for helping us white folks, now GTFO of your own country so we can use it for oil, just like jebus intended!'

Ah yes, I remember the news story from yesterday when Haiti claimed they had rebuilt everything and everyone has access to water and food and electricity and safe living conditions. After all, they are the most productive and richest country in the world.

/I'd really like to know the percentage of rebuilding that they managed

How so?
His supporters will continue to fully support him, and his detractors will continue to not like him.
Who is sitting on the fence, saying "Well I wasn't sure before, but I certainly don't care for this!"
I guess the only possible ones are some of his supporters who are directly affected by this. Not sure how popular he was within the Haitian community before.

I don't know about Haiti.
53% of Puerto Rico residents still without power.
Some Americans are even there.

About 90% of their exports are garments. I wonder if any of the Trump crap is made in Haiti.

I need an economist to butt in about how much these provisional residents have been remitting to Haiti. Many immigrants live in shiat conditions so they can send a significant portion of their wages home to improve things.

Haiti needs those funds to import materials and   build the structures they need. That way they can grow your tropical fruits to go in your smoothies.

"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

OK back to that Greek Colossus... he made a pretty solid point, it's about time we had a storied pomp of our own... MAGA!" ~ Emma Lazarus as interpreted by Donald Trump.

It was a land of opportunity to my ancestors in the 19th century though, they came here fleeing famine and oppression in Ireland and the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire in Bavaria... mostly, I'm not entirely sure of my maternal grandmother's heritage as she didn't talk about her dad and was at least part Cherokee on her mother's side *We suspect something bad was going on there and that she joined the Women's Army corps to get away from it after her mom and sister died*

Even in more recent times, my college roommate from India is doing well as an American engineer at a large firm.  The melting pot may only be simmering, but it's still going.  If we shut down immigration and start deporting people, especially from places we're afraid of, then the American experiment is over and we'll be just like all the powers we once rebelled against.

The melting pot is everything that makes America unique, without it we'll just be burning the city on the hill.

Also, it's 60k people. That's should be nothing for a country the size and wealth of the US. That's not even a month worth of refugees of what Germany took in.

They have been there for 7 years now. If they haven't broken laws, how about keeping them?

Also, they aren't Muslim.

There are a lot of "policies" that were never actually legally voted into law.  The time frame is also long enough that Congress could act as well.   If he really wanted to play both sides he could suggest that too.  "Just give me something to sign so it's done correctly."

What I'm saying is, even if it's not a good place to live at all, if the law that brought them is incident specific it should have been fixed long ago instead of kicking a can down the lane by saying it's still there.

I'm not advocating they be forced to leave, I'm just putting some blame on Congress.  If you don't like the situation changing, don't rely on taking laws well beyond their scope to maintain a status quo.

Pardon me, but WE were the one's doing THEM the favor by letting them stay here after the earthquake. Additionally, they are not immigrants, rather they are temporary refugees. All that happened is that today you learned what the word "temporary" means. And yes, I know Haiti is a shiathole, but it's on par with the shiathole it was before the quake, the criteria for ending the program. You'll notice, btw, the Canadians are also saying, "Sorry, go home."

Apple, Chrome, and Firefox all have private browsing modes in their phone versions, so there's plenty you can do from your phone to see those links.

And if you're using some other POS browser without a private mode then clearing out your cookies should do the job as well, genius.

Technically correct, the best kind.

Once you've let someone stay here for 5+ years, you need to give them a way to become permanent b/c they are now part of our society and probably don't have much to go back to. In the case of some of the other countries, we're talking more like 20 years.

Otherwise, you should cap the program at 1 year residence so we don't end up in this situation.

Damn. I worked on these cases, first when TPS was announced and then twice when they were extended. There are going to be all kinds of legal issues coming out of this decision, a big one being what will happen to Haitian parents of US citizen children. The whole breaking up families BS that this administration is know for won't go over well. Not to mention, he keeps adding more and more cases to the immigration court dockets making the wait time even longer (and it was years before Trump started.)

Unfortunately, personal-level analogies don't scale up to the nation or international level.

Better luck next time!
