(Fark)   Subby is writing an SF novel set in 2027 (end of world alien invasion type stuff). What kind of US & world will the aliens find? Ideas can be serious or silly, but should have reasons for them, even if unlikely. Winner(s) get to be taken by the BEMs   ( fark.com) divider line

Please, please find a different scenario. It's done to death.
Read some Beowulf Schaeffer Larry Niven stories. Read some Peter Cawdron. We need more stuff like that. Apocalypse Alien Invasion is just so tired.

Know that, realistically speaking, any race of beings that have that power and capability to cross the vast vast vaaaaaaast gulfs of space between stars would likely be able to get rid of us well before we knew they were here.

They put up a giant toll booth.  You can only leave the atmosphere if you have the right coins.

I'm pushing your timeline out to 2040 for Constitutional Presidential eligibility reasons.

President Thompson walked behind the resolute desk in the Oval Office and peered out the window to watch ship after ship of those filthy reptilians drop out of orbit.

President Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson was the 6th consecutive reality TV star America had elected (and widely regarded by both sides as the most successful to date) and many experts believed that it was now impossible for someone to become President unless they've already had tremendous ratings in the past....

/too dystopian?

The aliens come to invade Earth but find that the lizard people have already been here for years. They control the media and most political parties.

That, instead of invading, they are driven to such a frenzy of pity, they try to uplift us instead, because what they find is Idiocracy, 470 years too early.

After they're done uplifting us... Then they invade. Because, come on, a warrior species has to have something to fight against, otherwise it's just... shameful.

Earth 2027 has no United States, or humans, thanks to Trump.

Aliens who thrive on nuclear fallout like geriatrics tanning in Florida conduct a scan of our planet, discover an unlimited supply of cockroaches, and open thousands of resorts where major cities used to be.

China will be calling in US debt, communities on both coats will be gaining political power and have a huge population. Democrats will have forced through a new amnesty for "undocumented citizens". 20 years of quiet underground immigration while pointing the finger at mexicans was china's plan all along.
India and china will have both said fark it and will both have their fingers on the big red button.
Aliens are going to show up and say "nope"

It's actually something I've thought about for a while. Due to the extreme energy requirements, any sort of alien mission would want to bring as little as possible and just gather it at its destination. Which is why aliens might invade earth and not destroy civilization immediately: To find the two things you cant find anywhere else in the solar system: Industry and skilled labor. Even if its crude by their standards, once the invasion is complete it would be easier to upgrade our stuff than to start from scratch, particularly if they only had limited facilities aboard their ships(again because it's easier to get somewhere if you are travelling light).

You can find my stuff at http://www.emlia.org with the Waylights scenario sort of segueing after a XCOM bad end in which everyone loses.

Right now I am working on story-izing http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=left%20beyond which I QM'd earlier in the year.

My advice would be rather than try to imagine what that time will be like, imagine what it could plausibly become if aspects of society today were to continue and become more extreme. Less prediction, more social critique.

I suggest an America where years of economic stagnation have led to high unemployment where people have turned increasingly away from the crumbling infrastructure of the real world and more towards the virtual world, where people living in shabby conditions spend their time and their money acquiring and showing off their glittering in-game worlds and avatars.

Of course it's been done before, but so has everything else. Everyone bases their stories on the same cultures, the same histories and the same human nature. What matters is expressing your own individual take on the world we all share.

its a hard time in the future,  the world is out of original ideas and artificial intelligence relies on harvesting suggestions from human subjects in order to create diversionary materials to assist in ensuring a more manageable environment.

The best way to make this work subby, is to have it be a perception from the main character (Character is crazy / insane, like The Maxx), but the reader KNOWS that the character only perceives the world is invaded, etc.

The universe is run on the metric system, the invaders are destroyed when they cannot open an access panel of a nuke sent as a "gift" by the us, the rest of the universe destroys earth because they perceive standard and the imperial measuring system to be an abomination.

2017-11-19 08:53:55 AM
Seriously, only ten years from now?  It's not going to be any different, except maybe other countries will always be asking what China is doing instead of what the US is doing.

2017-11-19 09:25:28 AM
The aliens won't find any humans, because the humans will all be atrophied lumps, sitting in little cramped boxes, in front of their infotainment units, absorbing today's approved data. Everything else will be abandoned wasteland, decay, and garbage.

After a brief look around, the aliens will decide the place the place would take too much work to clean up and be made habitable, and they'll fark off to go find a planet to invade that doesn't suck. They might also leave a warning beacon in orbit to alert other potential invaders that it just ain't worth the effort, guys.

Is it our Earth or close to it?  If so, 2027 is too soon for the setting to not be a metaphor for the current geopolitical environment. Either keep it the same or make it an alternate reality. A 2017-influenced 2027 would overwhelm whatever sci-fi you write about.

Subby, don't make the mistake so many writers do, of expecting things to be wildly different ten years into the future. Look back ten years, to 2007. Things have changed since then, radically in the case of smartphones and the President, but lots of other things are pretty much the same.

In 2007, the President was an incredibly and widely unpopular Republican that was being disavowed even by many members of his own party, was known for his idiosyncratic way of speaking and was generally believed to be the dumbest President, if not ever then at least in most people's lifetimes.

Quite a radical change indeed.

US: is an Iranian type theocracy, run by conservatives, obviously. Moral purity tests for everything like getting into state schools which have all been contracted out to the likes of Trump University, Liberty, Bob Jones type outfits. The exception of course, as pioneered in our present day, is those running for political office may have records of despicable moral lapses which are forgiven as they endeavor to improve all our lives through public service. Only 10% of America is religious anymore but the number of mega-churches has continued to grow; Walmart Worldwide Worship churches exist in almost every small town in the country. Some argue that has made church less affordable while putting hard working clergy out of business. It's true the old ways have been altered but attendance at Wednesday child sex sessions is far better than the old bible studies.

The middle class is gone. The poor exist in great numbers and own 99% of the small arms in the country. CEO types live in perpetual fear of assassination and hire great numbers of personal security experts to provide protection, graduates of private academies teaching the long lost art of special forces type warfare. This worked so well that every police force in America has also been contracted out to private industry.

The rest of the world: has continued on beautifully to enjoy the advances in energy and environmental improvements we dream of today. The threat of war has long diminished as the USA no longer has it's finger in everything absent the tax monies to fund the military. It goes without saying that money was eventually shifted to the rich. Not coincidentally, the reduced American threat that has freed up the Russian and Chinese to pursue real space policies with the Russians mining asteroids and the Chinese regularly traveling to outposts on the moon and Mars. That activity is what attracted the aliens to come looking.

And, having paid dearly for amazing life extending medical treatments, Jim Bakker is still on TV selling buckets of something or other.

The West Coast is filled with beautiful people.  Ugly babies are euthanized at birth.  Northern California nerds are kept in farms -- coding farms -- and fed Soylent.  They're not allowed to mingle with the rest of the population.  The East Coast is largely swamp, populated by boat people who mostly live on decrepit yachts, surrounded by alligators.   The middle of the country is divided into North and South, the South largely populated by fat and stupid subhumans known ironically as the Good Ol Folk, while the North states have "recreated" a Viking homeland, with periodic raids of their Southern and Eastern neighbors.  Desert areas, the dumping grounds of nuclear waste, are home to mutant tortoises and giant venomous lizards.  There's a Great Wall of Canada to keep the undesirables out.  Presidents are elected by drinking contests.

A US and China engaged in a paper economic rivalry that hides the fact that they're completely codependent on each other.

A dawning realization that climate change is actually real as people start to slowly migrate from the coasts.

A multipolar world where the US continues to pretend that they're the big dog and is increasingly ignored.

A world where massive unregulated cyber conflicts wreck havok and cyber mercenaries hire themselves out to the highest bidder troll and cyber bully.

A world where the internet of things is real and dysfunctional.

A world of skyrocketing unemployment due to automation and the split into two economies: the official "Real Economy" (the Eloi Economy) of charts and GDP and stock prices, and the real economy (the Morlock Economy) of blackmarket trade, cryptocurrency and bartering.

A world of cyber feudalism where tech and media companies wall off huge sections of the internet to create digital company towns.

A world where privacy and secrets become commodities for the rich and powerful.

A world where gene editing and biotech have eliminated disease and aging for those who can afford it.

A world were Fark servers are still off-line.

I think this line depressed me the most, most likely because it is true, and also because I'm probably more Morlock than Eloi...
