It can happen and it's by degrees. Slowly switch off to your surrounds and do enough to stay alive.

We can't fathom it because we can't make the immediate mental leap from where we are now to where she is. But she didn't have to either. Just a little bit worse each day isn't too much to handle, until it's too much to change.

I have sads for these stories because I can imagine _everyone_ as a misfortune and a couple of years away from where she is.

I grew up down the street from a cat hoarder; you could smell the house from mine depending on wind direction.

A nauseating number of felines were removed from that house after the Health Dept. was (finally) called and from what I later overheard, not a one could be saved much less re-homed due to the inbreeding, infections, genetic defects and generalized mental instability that comes when that many animals are held in an 1100 square foot enclosure and never allowed outside because she knew they'd run away from her.

Moral of the story: I know hoarding is mental illness but serious: Stick to tea pots or concert t-shirts or mismatched Tupperware, any inanimate object that doesn't pay the ultimate price for your life choices.

Poor dogs. Now they get to live in a cage until they get put to death. Is that really better than dodging turds at granny's house? I assure you, dogs do not care how clean you keep the house. My dog will roll in a pile of shiat if he finds one.

Yes, this lady is gross, but is the final outcome better for the dogs? It's pretty certain that even if they get adopted the fact that they're not trained will lead to them being returned. These dogs will probably all be euthanized.

What a bummer. I guess now I'm an apologist for this lady. Whatever.

The shelter in charge of the dogs has already distributed some of them to other shelters, foster homes, etc. for safe keeping, medical care and human interaction.   They (Safe Harbor Animal Shelter) are a bunch of caring people that I have dealt with for years.  They do everything to rehab and adopt out ALL of their animals.  (They are also one of the few in the area that still have Pit Bulls... as they refuse to give up on the ones that are adoptable.)  The owner of the dogs is mentally unstable.  The only thing good they could say about her is that she kept them fed.  Unknown what she fed them.  Otherwise they were kept in an utterly filthy, crap-filled house 24/7 with no real attention or exercise.  She will never get charges due to her mental state, but hopefully she never gets the dogs back.  That goes for her neglectful family who had nothing to do with her, but suddenly want to talk to the media.

Poor lady.. She seems mentally ill. Almost like a hoarder. Something traumatic happens and a switch turns off in their brain and they convince themselves the filth they live in is perfectly acceptable.

I'm a person that never gets

how someone can own dozens of pets

.

Didn't you ever notice that

you can't get to the door without stepping on a cat?

.

Or, that you have so many dogs that their fecal matter

Ends up in your pancake batter?

.

In the end,

your house is condemned

.

And, your neighbors are annoyed...

The irony is the pets you love are usually destroyed.

Go read up on the health of animals rescued from hoarders.  Parasites, viral infections, lung damage, infighting, you name it.  It is much more than just dodging feces.

TFA said her husband died a year ago. It never said what happened to the body.

Someone should deck you.

Everyone's a farkin joker.

Oh don't get all flush.

Damn straight!

Well I'll just shuffle along.

Other than this, I'd have thought that she wasn't playing with a full deck.

We should cut her a break.  We really don't know what the real deal is here.  She just didn't have the heart to discard any of those dogs.  Some other joker would have taken them down to the river and flushed them.

Seems mentally ill?  She most definitely is.

Or maybe she identifies as a toilet.

You're saving the animals, it doesn't matter. Even when the animals all get sick and keep dying, they still think that they're the best deal the animals are going to get.
And you know, they might not be that wrong.

Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats). The number of dogs and cats euthanized in U.S. shelters annually has declined from approximately 2.6 million in 2011.

That's nothing. My dad's old dog used to kill coyotes then hide them in the brush until they were proper ripe. Then she'd roll in the muck.

My dog dug up a guinea pig that had died about two weeks before. I hadn't buried it deep enough. then she rolled around in it.

Bad dog! Bad dog!

Your dog wants steak.  A whole steak, not shared with fifty-one others and only getting half a bite.
