I'm really curious to know what percentage of this group really, truly believes what they claim to believe, and what percentage actually just gets off on trolling outsiders and, more likely, each other. I'd bet a pretty significant that the first number is very, very low, and the second number is very, very high. In fact, the entire organization may consist of one guy who's actually a True Believer, and everybody else who just likes to keep him going.

This reminds me of going on a ghost tour a while back.  A buddy and I brought q-beams and were telling people to watch the edge of the shadows for specters.  It got better as the night went on because every other stop was a haunted bar.  If you weren't seeing ghosts by the end of the night then you didn't drink enough.  In any case, the Flat Earth shiat *could* be fun if they couple it with lots of drinking.

Sure, they show up for a laugh and to be "ironic." But they leave as true believers.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but you can't argue with science.

If you don't believe the Earth is flat, you can easily prove it to yourself by going on your roof with a small telescope and looking at Chicago, which can be seen from anywhere on the disc.

I remember seeing some clips from the British Flat Earth Society or some such when I was a teenager, and it seemed pretty much all tongue-in-cheek.

Britain really does produce the best eccentrics.

If people think the earth is round, they won't watch where they walk and often fall over the edge, which counts as human sacrifice to the demons living on the underside of the disk, which satisfies them and prevents them from invading the rightside-up.

A full quarter of the country is too dumb to function. It's not limited to the US, either. Somewhere between 20 and 30 percent of the population of the planet is stupid and has always been stupid and will always be stupid. Facebook and Twitter have just made their stupidity more visible.

The comments section on another site that I frequent was recently posted an article on this same conference and was subsequently descended upon by Flat Earthers. (I'd even estimate a 50-60% chance that one or two of them weren't trolls!)  A lot of people asked the same question you asked.

Their answer is that ultimately, they don't know, but it probably has to do with keeping people ignorant of the amount of resources and land that are still available in order to better control the population. Or something. They never really say what the endgame is for the control of society, or explain how this conspiracy has been going on consistently for hundreds (if not thousands) of years.

What I'm saying is, they're not very bright people. Even if they are just faking it.

/ Creationists are still worse for society, though, by sheer numbers and political power.

If you go to a site like Quora.com, you will see all kinds of questions about the flat Earth.  And they are usually something like, "If the Earth is really round, then why don't the stars ever move at night?"

This is just one example, but it is indicative of the type of questions asked.  Where the premise of the question is so flawed that it's not even worth answering.  Other than to say, "The stars DO move, you farking moron."

So I've pretty well concluded that there is no such thing as Flat Earthers.  No one really believes that.  The whole lot of them are trolls.  They ask these silly questions, and posit these silly theories and conspiracies, and then they sit back and laugh, watching the internet fall all over themselves explaining why the Earth is, in fact, obviously not flat.

Here is a picture of a Flat Earther:

Online, I think a lot of these videos are done for advertising revenue by trolls.

At a conference like this, you have the true believers.  I actually feel bad for them, as a combination of loneliness (one admits as much) and undiagnosed mental illness create needless strife.  The guy who said the round earth is satan's greatest lie?   That guy actually lays awake at night worrying about this.  They're riling themselves up over something that doesn't matter in the slightest.

The Bible says the Earth is flat. The satanic freemasons devised the round Earth lie in order to make people doubt the infallible word of God and strength Satan's grip on humanity since if you believe the Earth is round then you believe the Bible isn't literally true.

To add some more you've also got another camp of hardcore conspiracy theorists whose idea basically boils down to. "A whole bunch of governments and scientists say the Earth is round, and since they lie about everything the Earth must be flat."

SirDigbyChickenCaesar: So he earth is shaped like a coin.  Wouldn't our orbit around the sun be much more chaotic?  Can they point anything else that is naturally occurring that wants to form hat shape?

Lots of folks have believed the sun doesn't orbit and the earth doesn't orbit. Example, Shinto has a sun spirit, Amaterasu (female), which generally comes out every day. Except one day she got furious at her brother and sulked in a cave.

This failure to come out caused serious problems, obviously, because sunlight is essential for plants and other growing stuff. Also, without sunlight the horrible demons that live somewhere on the bottom of the coin-shaped earth weren't afraid and climbed out then greatly bothered the folks on living earth.

Amaterasu (Sun) was coaxed out of the cave, first with roosters (sort of makes sense), then a mirror (???), then a striptease by another spirit (female). Anyway, here is a short video that shows what happened on the flat earth:
