What? You never did mega-crossovers of all the action figures in your toybox? Come on. The kids will be fine.

As long as there's nothing truly disturbing in the videos (realistic violence, say), as far as I can tell the only real issue is (pretty transparent) copyright infringement.

Read the article man. There's some pretty farked up stuff in the videos it's talking about.

The problem of video-makers using popular characters such as Peppa Pig in violent or sexual videos, to frighten children, has been widely reported.

However, Mr Bridle's blog post went deeper into what he called the rabbit hole of children's content on YouTube.

I'm not surprised that some bad stuff slipped by the human reviewers. The way they pay those reviewers is by the minute, but they don't always assign enough minutes per video to watch the whole thing. So basically the reviewers have to skim through the thing in order to complete the review in the allotted time. (This is alluded to in this article: https://arstechnica.com/features/2017/04/the-secret-lives-of-google-raters/ )

300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute - it would be absolutely impossible to review them. Weren't 4Chan editing hardcore porn into kids videos a few years back to piss YouTube off?

When my son was younger, he really liked a series of Youtube videos similar to the ones in TFA,  which were obviously made with a GTA mod where characters were reskinned as various superheroes. I didn't really like it, as it was really low-quality entertainment, but I ocasionnally let him watch one or two. Basically, it was 10 minutes of Iron-Man/Superman/Wolverine wandering around in an empty Liberty City, ocassionaly driving a schoolbus or a car reskinned as Flash McQueen, with nursery rhymes playing in the background.

There was that one time however, when Spider-Man entered a parked Flash McQueen. It still used GTA's "steal a parked car" animation, so Spider-Man broke Flash's window with his elbow to unlock the door....

Play Roblox with your kids.  I can't stress this enough.  There is a metric crap ton of inappropriate stuff in Roblox.  They police it like crazy, but it comes through all the time.

So if your kid plays Roblox, make sure you play it with them.

Also, I'm surprised at the number of parents who DON'T keep up with the youtube stars their kids watch.  I'm pretty on-top of who/what my kids watch (Heck, I even went to the DanTDM live action concert, my son got to go up on stage, it was one of his highlights of the year).  Of course, could your parent's really name all the shows that you watched when you were their age?

I actually like DanTDM, you can be 100% sure he's not going to act or say something inappropriate. He's quite professional in fairness to him, I don't begrudge him his fame or fortune. I can't stand that awful family, they look Hispanic (is that a bad word, "hispanic"? I can't keep up) the father is the driving force, he's a horrible individual.

I have seen a character with an S&M skin for their roblox character (Black pants, no shoes, no shirt, black ski mask) and had GIMP in his name.  He got kicked, but kept coming back.

There will be people who ask kids inappropriate questions, too.  It sometimes is A/S/L or asking for a phone number, email or facebook account.

It's not ALL the servers, and it doesn't always happen, but it happens enough that I would prefer to be on a Roblox server with my kids (and it adds to the fun, IMHO).  Roblox is also very good about kicking problem people quickly.  Keeping them off, though...

Thanks, will keep an eye out for that. Pity there is no way of disabling the chat.

You can disable the chat.  The problem is the kids usually re-enable to talk with their friends / each other / etc.  They also have filters, and police it.  The problem is that any place that is a kids playground tends to attract a lot of non-kids-that-like-to-play at kid playgrounds.

This is BS.

I have to do a lot of searching for new peppa pig porn and these kids get it without any effort

When I read the article earlier, I had thought it was saying that not only were the algorithms not catching this stuff but it was slipping by in the minuscule fraction of content that does get looked at by humans as well. Maybe it wasn't saying that? Regardless, the process they have for flagged videos and human curation is also overloaded beyond belief.

"Last week, a blog post by writer James Bridle highlighted how YouTube was still being swamped by bizarre and indecent videos aimed at children."

I like how people think that just because something is animated that it's meant for children. There's plenty of mainstream cartoons meant for adults only, what makes them think You Tube would be any different?

"But critics say YouTube is not taking enough action by waiting for viewers to report inappropriate videos."

People who make these kinds of comments obviously have no clue how the internet or You Tube works. If You Tube moderated every video people uploaded, it would take thousands of employees working around the clock and they would still have a 10 year backlog

No they couldn't and thank god we could always slip stuff past our parents if it had a bland enough title.
