Patricia Spann also married her biological son in 2008 but it was annulled in 2010, after he called it "incestuous."

He's right, you know.

Y'know... I've had this come up in the whole same-sex marriage debate.

It's very difficult to answer "why shouldn't these two get married" without making an argument that equally applies against any same-sex marriage.

The example I was given was two brothers marrying.

Some people just go all slippery-slope and talk about people marrying their pets etc, which is easy to shoot down as pets can't possibly understand the concept.   But two same-sex family members?  I honestly can't think of a reason why without instantly thinking of a counter-argument to shoot myself down.

Because if it's in a family, there's likely to be a power/abuse dynamic somewhere in there. It's highly unlikely to be a fully consensual relationship.

I don't see the problem here, societally.

Honestly, even if it was legal, almost nobody would bang their own family members. Of those few who would, as long as they are over 18 and consenting the only concern for society would be children with birth defects. That's not in play here.

Plus, they annuled it in a few weeks. I've had beer cans sit in the fridge longer. Gross, but not "spend taxpayer money on it" gross

Meh. 7.6 billion people on the planet. I should care about a statistically insignifincant number of them having a statistically non zero chance of inbreeding related defects? If they're consenting, in the legal and moral sense (That is to say, of age and not forced, threatened or otherwise coerced.) It's not even worth the court paperwork.

Either way, it's certainly not myproblem.

While disgusting to me personally, what is the crime or harm here? Aren't incest laws meant to protect minors and/or prevent 3 eyed 7 toed babies? These are two consenting adults and they aren't likely to produce any progeny via any known natural means.

Records show she thought the marriage was legal since the mother's name was no longer on the daughter's birth certificate.

So in her mind marrying a direct blood relative is only illegal because the paperwork is confusing if they have the same name?

lindseyp: I honestly can't think of a reason why without instantly thinking of a counter-argument to shoot myself down.

I think the argument has more to do with the nature of the relationship between siblings.  There may not always be a  sibling rivalry issue, but you are talking about people who were raised together, there are strange family dynamics.  There are other types of relationships we frown on- teachers and students, even when the students are of age, bosses and underlings, jailers and prisoners...

The argument gets trickier when you get out to first cousins.  Personally, I like the idea of having some people in my life that I'm not supposed to look at as part of the sexual pecking order.  I think that provides a valuable buffer against what's out there.  That said, if you've got two siblings/cousins whatever who grew up not knowing each other, who meet and fall in love, who can't have children... I mean, most of the time when that happened they would get disgusted by it when they found out, and I find it deeply icky myself, but then if no one is being harmed...

When a parent is involved... I mean, shouldn't she be in jail for marrying her son?  That's some weird variety of pedophelia, just slightly removed in time.  As I've gotten older, I'm 46 now, I've started running into people that I knew when I was already an adult, who I knew when they were children.  I've had one of those moments where I didn't recognize them at first, and man, did I feel creepy, and as 'checking out' women goes, I'm not a particularly pervy perp.

No offspring from 2 people of the same sex, your argument is invalid.

I'm equally surprised there are quite a few people agreeing with me in the thread.  I mean I find the concept abhorrent, but that's no justification for restricting peoples' freedoms.

You've basically supplied your own counter-argument right there.  We do "frown upon" relationships between teacher/student,  jailer/jailed etc but once outside the contract period none of those relationships are illegal, and many do get married!
