Of course, one of the reasons Joseph went through with the marriage was because if he hadn't them Mary would have been stoned to death as an adulteress when it became obvious she was pregnant.  Pregnant with a child who, by the way, she had no choice in whether or not to have because God didn't get around to asking for her consent until He had already done the deed.

But anyway - let's get back to what you were saying.  It was something about how Christianity is the one true and moral religion whose rules everyone in the country should be forced to abide by and it's 100% OK with old men creeping on young girls?

She probably did have a choice. Humans have free will. He sent an angel to let her know his intention to knock her up and she agreed. Having angels as messengers is a total panty dropper.

I assume these days the angel is simply the pilot arriving with your private jet to pick her up to go to your private island for dinner.

I've read the gospels quite a few times; I don't recall any evidence in those passages to a significant age difference between Joseph and Mary.  I don't think those words mean what they think they mean...

Matthew 1:18-25King James Version (KJV)
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
20But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.

I think any angels involved in Roy Moore taking a 14 year old home were closer to this-

intellectually, I know that the evangelical christians backing Moore will say and do anything to win.  I know that 'upstairs', in my brain.  but its when evidence shows up that proves these evangelicals are willing to overlook rape and pedophilia, its *STILL* an emotional gut punch of rage, disgust and horror.  this is a betrayal of the sort that gives abuse victims years of emotional problems.  the GOP should be OUTRAGED at Moore over this....but they're not outraged, they quietly closed ranks around this rapist and started the standard issues attacks on the victims.

evangelical christianity IS NOT OUR FRIEND.  incident after incident, scandal after scandal, crime on top crime on top crime.....and these people hide behind their bibles and pretend they worship a god of love.  no wonder this country is abandoning christanity faster than ever before.  I just hope we can maybe somehow reach at least SOME of the victims and get them the help they'll need.

I wish I could say that I was surprised to see the evangelicals and the GOP defending Moore....but this is entirely in line with their 'win at all costs' philosophy.  Doug Coe built one hell of a cult before he died.  this is exactly the sort of thing he'd use to advance his political goals if he were still alive.

Not to mention that Joseph and Mary were a married couple. Most, if not all, states' statutory rape laws make exceptions for sexual relations between an adult and a minor if the minor is the adult's spouse, in which case it's not considered statutory rape or any other crime.

i'm kinda getting the vibe from the evangelicals that they don't care about rape, statutory or otherwise.  they seem to believe that rape is the victim's fault and that 'holy men' can't be punished for their crimes.

The bar for egregious behavior that Republicans will forgive of their own has been set so low that gophers are tunneling overit- and every day they push it lower.

All of the sexual assaults coming to light, from every side, aren't about sex but power. If it was only about sex they could've just paid someone and been done.  But instead they need new targets that they can demonstrate their power over, and over the last 25 odd years the Republicans have show that the only thing they care about is power. It is the only consistency in their positions, especially since to them money and power are one and the same. So to a certain degree their unwillingness to indict their own may well be less about tribalism and more about their dreams of conquest. Hell, maybe them getting up on TV and saying stupid shiate like this is an extreme position for them because what they really, really want to say is, "Good job Roy! Wish I'd thought of that."

I say feed them more rope. Tell us more about what you think is proper for a 32 year old attorney to do with a 14 year old girl. Be clear fellows.

Then, let's do a reality check with some of the less zealous members of the community that have been a bit go-along-get-along. Because as crazy as things are, I'm thinking that the best move here is to turn up the volume of some people's microphones so that everyone gets to hear their oh-so-special defense of the behavior that they aren't even bothering to deny.

If there are enough zealots to carry Moore over the finish line regardless, well then there's not much to be done. But I think there are quite a few who are going to be very uncomfortable about this. And the only thing that could rally them to Moore is if they feel like the attacks are on Evangelical Christians rather than on one particular hypocritical abuser.

It usually takes a few days for scandals like this to be reflected in polling, so he may no longer be in the lead. It wouldn't shock me if he still kept his lead, but I think it is too early to really tell what effect this has had on the public opinion.

I wonder if there's any lines the evangelical republicans WON'T cross?  they obviously think rape is fine, and have little problems with letting sexual predators have at it with vulnerable teens.  But abortion and birth control are evil and have to be outlawed, because of course they are.  Gun violence and mass murder (as long as the shooter is white and christian) are excusable, but even ONE injury or smashed window by a brown person has to be met with overwhelming military force.  protesting against nazis is bad, but nazis themselves are 'very fine people'.  Gold star families deserve what they get.

Got me what it is evangelical republicans think is good and evil.  they're all over the map when it comes to morality.

Fark the lot of them. Garbage. The worst.

The problem is, for some of them, they ARE fine with that, as long as they get to get their hands on some other dude's preteen daughter and their own girl gets married off to that financially stable man her dad likes after being felt up. Look at FLDS. Look at...well, many cultures all over the earth who practice polygamy. Old, old dudes with girls too young to safely breed, and their dads condone perpetuate this. In places where people can have multiple wives gross old dudes swap their kids with each other to add on to the wife count. Because to them, their daughter IS less important than getting to stick their dick in a young, young girl.

I'm honestly kinda scared of what would happen if those guys got asked those questions, because as someone else pointed out, this has the potential to be the Sandy Hook of sexual assault. It may come out that some people (well, republicans anyway) flat out don't care about men raping even underage girls because girls are inferior to men and if a man is going around being important then...well...I guess some rape is okay if other dudes like him. We're getting tons of women talking about what really happens now, in terms of sexual assault, and that may force us to find out who cares about that, and who overtly comes out as pro-rape. Deep down, I think I know what their truthful answer to those questions would be, whether or not they say them out loud.

We are indeed getting a light shone on some disgusting people and portions of our country. I hope he gets kicked out some how, but it's not a no-brainer that this guy won't get elected and then child rape will be a thing it's known you can openly do....so long as you have an R after your name.

2 choices:
1. Decide both sides are bad and ignore it. Register your protest vote. That will show them.
2. Declare one side is much worse and make sure they never get in power.  Even if you have to hold your nose and vote for someone who doesn't inspire you.

I very much expect Roy Moore to get elected to the Senate.  the GOP cannot afford to lose that seat to the Democrats....so for reasons of political expediency, the republican party is going to officially condone rape and sexual assault.  ain't politics great?

I think we discussed similar issues in a thread yesterday.  It brought to my mind an anecdote I heard just this week from a dear friend.  He's retired military, fought in Iraq and was deployed elsewhere.  He struggles with PTSD and other issues as a consequence.

Anyhow, a while back he was receiving inpatient treatment of some kind--I didn't ask what for.  He grew up Baptist as I did and wanted a pastor to come and visit.  Apparently he made contact with several different pastors, all of whom hemmed and hawed and none of whom deigned to show up.  Then someone suggested he contact our head priest, so he did.  And this priest, who also didn't know him from Adam, came to visit, more than once, and talked to my friend, and really sincerely listened without judgment, without shoving a list of rules in his face.  That was enough to convince said friend to cross over, as it were.

That increased my respect for the priest tenfold.  Churches wonder why Christianity is hemorrhaging followers.  Here's a thought for them:  Maybe stop being Exhibit A and go back to being Exhibit B instead.  That's why people are leaving, not because they "hate God" and "hate Christians" and "want to live in sin and pride and don't want to follow rules," but because witches and atheists and Buddhists and Unitarian Universalists, and pretty much everyfarkingone, are doing your job for you, and are clearly doing a hell of a lot better at it.
