Maybe hating everything and being disagreeable about sports was a bad business plan?

2017-11-09 06:44:52 PM
Well after Thanksgiving is when they need to clear time in their line-up for the Bounty Extra-Strength Paper Towel Bowl Dot Com between Northwest Michigan (6-6) and Central Louisiana State (5-7).

Somehow I don't think my cable bill is going to go down.

They already farked up when they fired John Clayton.

/Glad he has a weekday show on our local ESPN Radio affiliate, though.

Getting rid of anyone with any sort of talent or following hasn't worked out. Back before my brain, sort of, developed, I'd flip between Dan Patrick and Limbaugh while driving between offices. ("The Dan Patrick Show, on ESPN Radio")

I wasn't a fan of Cowherd when they replaced Kornheiser (sic?) with him. But he grew on me. I think Cowherd leaving was the beginning of the end.

/F Limbaugh. What the hell was I thinking?

2017-11-09 08:38:59 PM
Yeah, fire your actual talent.  Ignore the fact that you're overpaying for broadcast rights and failed to develop a new stream of revenue when it was clear for a decade that cable was a declining model.

It's hard for me to listen to regular sports radio now that so many good podcasts are available. No commercials (minus reads you can easily skip past), and each one is as long or short as the host wants each day.

The very failing ESPN is failing because they were so very unfair to the Precedent.  VERY UNFAIR!!!

UNC_Samurai: Yeah, fire your actual talent.  Ignore the fact that you're overpaying for broadcast rights and failed to develop a new stream of revenue when it was clear for a decade that cable was a declining model.

Pretty much, although I'd argue there's little reason for much "talent" anymore, other than actual live-game commentators. There's virtually no reason for any modern iteration of a televised Sportscenter to exist for instance; I'm certain most people under the age of 60 watch highlights of the games they care about on their phones or at work on their computers, peruse a few related blogs and such, and after just a few minutes they're otherwise satiated for the day with sports stuff.

As much as I could wax poetic for hours about how fun it was growing up watching Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann snark their way through 60 minutes Sportscenter episodes, the ease and variety of ways we can consume similar content nowadays makes the format redundant and outdated by the time it airs.

Why didn't ESPN do the right thing?  You know, say something like, "We need to discuss your employment here, but I don't want to ruin your Thanksgiving, so we'll talk the Monday after."

2017-11-09 11:07:25 PM
My wish list.

Dan LeBatard
Jemele hill
Bomani Jones
Sarah Spain

And it's too bad they just gave Trey Wingo the new show with Mike Golic to replace Mike Greenberg.  Wingo is the Jim Carrey of ESPN. He tries way too hard to be funny and just isn't. He's just farking obnoxious.

LeBatard and Bomani have the only tolerable shows on ESPN.

And honestly, if you think you're going to take a dude who has his job because of his kid, and fire his kid, and he's going to stay, you're out of your mind.

You people want more vanilla idiots fake-informing you about dumb sh*t, feel free, but sports are a joke and should be treated as such. Some of the shiat going on in sports is actually relevant, and they discuss the relevant parts.

I love me some Highly Questionable because it gets to the lighter side.  Not to mention the stupid clips and even stupider shows they pitch for the Sí o No segment.  Pali makes that show, but my favorite moment was the show just after the Falcons blew the Super Bowl.  I thought Bomani was going to drop from a stroke.

I know they are not getting rid or Jones or Torre because they are gearing up a new show with them.

2017-11-10 02:53:21 AM
Will this lead to an increase or a decrease in the amount of New York and Boston metro sports team coverage? Because if I can't see Brady every 5 minutes, I might forget he exists.

2017-11-10 06:53:59 AM
I was at a bar last night and look up at the screen with ESPN on.  3 talking heads discussing Tom Brady eating a cheeseburger and ice cream.  Not joking.  With how popular fantasy sports are people want to see highlights of games, you know, like what a sports channel should do.

2017-11-10 07:07:34 AM
I only watch PTI and I only watch it when Wilbon is on.  I don't know who the majority of the other people mentioned on this thread even are.  Maybe some of you would hate ESPN less if you watched less of their programming.  Maybe even considered reading a book instead of watching Jemele flirt with Michael.  Just this once.  I don't understand the vitriol.  Just don't watch it.  I watch sports less and less as time passes, but I'm very certain that I enjoyed watching games more than watching people talk about games.  Maybe it's just me.

PTI for me. Kornheiser, Wilbon, and Pablo Torre (mayyyybe Michelle Beadle) are the only current personalities that I like. Bomani has his moments, but I think he's mostly annoying.

Hopefully they only employ chocolate idiots from now on. Seems to be working great so far, can't wait to catch tonight's episode of "The 6", where we can listen to more informative discussion about Colin Kapernik.

/ESPN will be so happy to have found the one pathetic jackass who wants to hear politics instead of sports on the channel, make sure you watch a lot of ESPN because they need your ratings

Not that I'm shedding a tear for anyone from ESPN getting sacked, I just despise when a company does this around the holidays. Last year we cut back on a field position, literally cutting the number of them in half. They were informed last week of October their final day of work would be Thanksgiving. Just farking glorious.

And of course you'd be stupid enough to think that those phrases encapsulate them.

And no, they don't get me as a viewer, 'cause anyone with an IQ above freezing doesn't pay for cable/dish.

I have to admit, I like Stephen A. Smith.  As far as radio goes, would be fine if they axed pretty much everyone else save LeBatard (although his preaching is utterly ridiculous sometimes, especially considering his background) and Rusillo.  But I see the appeal of Mike & Mike, so maybe keep those two.

80% of Bomani's show is calling people racist.  You're racist if you don't like Lavar Ball, racist if you don't want 23 hours of Kapernick coverage a day, racist if you don't follow the NBA, racist if.....  The other 20% is him desperately trying to prove his street cred with the producer.  It's awful. Outside of self-loathing whites and maybe a few black people, I don't think anyone listens.
