The law was great when it meant they could kidnap escaped slaves or keep people enslaved in free states. As soon as it looked like the laws may one day be changed, they were out.

If this case were taken to jury trial there is no f*cking way in hell they would get a guilty verdict. Like literally no f*cking way in hell.

That's why they dropped the charges. That and because they have some common sense and they understand the context of the event.
