The key here is "one". It's way too easy to commit atrocities when you're physically removed from the fight. Even a bomber pilot under orders can see the destruction immediately below.

My concern is what that really means. No autonomous vehicles, autonomous surgery bots, search and rescue drones, actually, a good deal of jobs we may want automated would often come down to a life or death choice. In the case of self driving cars, killing the driver vs a pedestrian, or killing the driver vs a passenger.

There is not a way to avoid programming for these situations, so we either account for them, make standards as a society, accept them, and audit the programs... Or we don't have robots in pretty much any position outside of tasks like stocking and building in locations devoid of humans with no thought processing.

To which my reply is "MUA HAHA HAH HAH HAH HAHA HAHHHA HAHHHAH HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHA!"

All it takes is one crazy asshole for any system to fail.

If all it takes with one asshole with a gun who is physically there to end large groups of people, what happens when every cop on every corner is suddenly taken over with the urge to end lives at their whim, simply because some shiatty hair-trigger safety protocol is tripping, leading to lots of innocent deaths?

Um.

Yeah, that's true. I still think that it's better to not have some nut case military guy or a moron President with his finger on the button. But really I don't give a shiat.

I liked it better when these "we're all going to die" headlines were less plausible.

Based on any of the programmers I've known, the "everybody_dies" variable is going to always be set to 1.

I suppose it would make a rather unpleasant change from some spreadsheet deciding if your medicine or worth your healthcare premiums. Oh, Aus. No wonder they don't like the idea, they cover stuff like that already with a smidgen of human decency.

But I did see Chappie on Netflix Sunday.
