At last there is a write-in candidate I can support for Everett mayor. I was delighted to read in the Sept. 7 Herald that Gary Watts has filed with the auditor.
For decades, Everett has been governed by tired old Democrats. The city has fallen to its lowest level with the homeless, drug addicts and dealers ruling the streets. There are hypodermic needles and human excrement throughout the streets and parks. All that has been ignored by our city leaders. All they have done is just throw money at the problem and the problem has flourished.
I have patronized Mr. Watts' business, Z-Sport Automotive for years. A businessman of his stature will be a great asset for the city.
Please write in Gary Watts for mayor of Everett. It's time to put our esteemed good ol' girls, Cassie Franklin and Judy Tuohy, out to pasture.

Hypodermic needles and human excrement in the streets and parks doesn't sound like a left-right issue.  It sounds like a basic city sanitation issue.  If the city government was failing to deal with the situation, that sounds like pretty decent grounds to toss 'em out of office, regardless of the "D" or "R" after their names.

Yeah.  Except that's not really the issue.  The issue is that poor people are outside his business, so he's going to accuse then of being a public nuisance by saying they're all on drugs yada yada yada.

For all I know, they are.  But it's his side that had consistently enacted policies devoted to creating poor drug addicts, so fark him.  I feel bad for those people because they're homeless and have to live beneath that overpass.  Who the hell wouldn't get high with a life like that?

Washington has a pretty low rate of overdose deaths and painkiller prescriptions compared to the national average, but at the same time Everett has up to 44% of the county's homeless and 14% of the population. But still there's only 100-200 perpetually homeless individuals but thousands of individuals and families in shelters. This guy's view of the problem is pretty myopic but it's good he spent a few thousand bucks to share it.

Using the Tweakerville campaign as a platform, Watts invested $50,000 of his own money into a write-in campaign for mayor.

What a waste. With a bit of effort he could have had the Russians sponsor and run his campaign for free.

There's video in the news report of someone tying off to shoot up in broad daylight right out in the open on a city street.  How is that possibly acceptable behavior?

Look...I've been poor myself.  I've also been an IV drug user.  The two go hand-in-hand.  And even in the very depths of my addiction, I'm talking about times when I would shoot up in a port-a-potty in a city park, I at least had a shred of dignity that drove me to do my thing out of the sight of the public and to take my paraphernalia with me.  And I'm telling you I was in bad shape.

Yeah, absolutely make help available.  I personally benefited from a long term rehab run by a Christian organization that helped get me to clean up and then get on my feet financially (why, btw, I refuse to join in with political Christian bashing...the people who helped me were socially conservative Christians and they were there for me when I needed help the most.  I know what real Christianity looks like and I think we could do with a lot more of it in this country.  And I say that as a gay guy.)  One thing I discovered in that process is that if you really want to quit drugs and get a better life, and you're willing to work for it (huge "if" there), then the options are there.  You just have to get up off the sidewalk and do it.

But with that kind of behavior going on right across the street from his business, this guy has every reason to be pissed off.  I would be too.  And it looks like the city tolerates it, because he's been running his cam and still nothing gets done.

Welcome to the other Washington.  Politicians here have declared that doing anything to curtail public drug use is discrimination and war against the homeless.  As a result you see shooting up in public places, in parks, on the freeway.  Yes on the freeway.  The overpasses where homeless live have turned the freeways above into popular places to go use your drugs while watching the passing cars.  You can go to Pike Place market and watch them down in the park below.  The park that is supposed to attract families to use the green space while shopping at the market. You will also find discarded syringes and needles in all those places.

Most stores near the homeless encampments have also permanently closed their bathrooms because of the same thing.  Blood and needles on the bathroom floor and in the garbage.  Leaving them open was a danger to the public and employees.  The police don't investigate break ins and looting of residences and cars other than to take a report which they will honestly tell you will never be followed up.

Every year more taxes and funds go to help the homeless because this is Washington where all you have to do is say the word "homeless" and voters will say yes to the tax.  And then all of the funds get spent on advertising the problem or go into the politicians pockets.  They do things like set up parking areas for all the non running RVs that the addicts and dealers are living in and then allow companies to charge them $20,000 per day to maintain the porta-potties in the lot.

They hired homeless czar who was supposedly an expert in programs that dealt with homelessness and paid him a salary of over $130,000 per year... then ignored his advice when he said they were doing things all wrong and needed to stop all the little "fixes" that amounted to nothing more than shuffling the problem around the city.

Seriously, if you don't live in the area start doing some real research into it.  Read articles, watch YouTube videos.  The current state of homelessness and drug use in the Seattle area is straight out of a dystopian novel about the dangers of homeless people and their drug use.  Only it's real.

Actually, yes. Most chronic homeless are either drug addicts or alcoholics. Many also have some other kind of mental health problem, but there's also significant overlap between the two.

Absent substance abuse or mental illness, people who find themselves homeless generally aren't that way for long.

More than 50 million spent in 2016 which is about 16 thousand per homeless person.  Things got worse. 50 million the year before with fewer homeless people.  Things got worse.  In fact Seattle has been spending about 50 million a year for the past decade.  In that time homelessness and open drug usage has skyrocketed.

His complaint isn't that money is being spent on the homeless crisis, and there has never been a war on drugs and the homeless here.  Seattle is arguably more liberal than most of California. It's that a bunch of clueless clowns are in charge of that money and they now want to double it.  If they spent the money to get Trump to come out and throw paper towels at the homeless camps it would be a more effective use.
