Six jurors who were questioned Wednesday by a Broward County judge about a deputy who had contacted one of the jurors on Facebook said the incident did not impact their decision in the case of convicted rapist Dobie Hunter.

They finally got you, Dobie!

The headline made me listen to the Boomtown Rats' "The Elephant's Graveyard" ("You see the judge and then you check the jury. She does her hair and calls the lawyer cutie. ... Yeah they're guilty 'till proven guilty.") So I've got that going for me.

Hunter was found guilty of repeatedly raping a 16-year-old girl in 1985 in Fort Lauderdale.
Police said DNA evidence helped them arrest Hunter 32 years after the crime was committed.

What in the world is valid DNA evidence after 32 years, and who can testify that it was properly stored all that time?
Seems like a stretch...

Well it just so happens that the river scenes in Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan flicks were filmed in Florida.

I am going to guess the DNA from a child born as a result of the rape?

That '23 and me' and like genealogy services are bringing up things like this left and right.  Say the child of the victim plugged in their DNA/Family tree another child of the rapist did the same they could be matched showing the same father.  At least from stories  I have heard that is how it all works.

Yeah... That's not super uncomfortable or anything... I'm part of a jury and some random-ass guy in the courtroom essentially says "I found youuuu" online? I'd be pretty farking nervous even if it was the deputy. WTF is he doing looking up my name online? Why is he looking for my name ANYWHERE?

Genuinely curious. I have a background in biology so I understand the basics.
That's a pretty serious insinuation though...

Good point, I had never considered that. It would be a hard, if unfortunate, thing to dismiss.
Seems as though the guy was guilty though, because once sentenced he simply said "I'm sorry", not "You have the wrong guy"...

Thee's a huge backlog of rape kits sitting in evidence lockes all across the counter, and thanks to advances in DNA tech you need a VERY little bit of DNA to run tests these days.  Even dried and degraded, a few flakes of blood or other fluid can easily be enough to test thanks to the DNA multiplication techniques we now have.,  Important to note we don;t test a full genome....just 23 or so known alleles  the chances of them all being a match on an unrelated person are roughly equal to flipping heads 23 times in a row

Yeah, I've read how many go untested/for how long, it is somewhat unreal.
Thanks for the info, apparently my familiarity with current DNA testing is outdated. I know they have been sequencing prehistoric animals, but I figured that was only in specific circumstances and at significant cost/effort, not some guy's dried out, 30 year old spunk in a dead end rape case.

So if your analogy and my math are correct, the odds of a match would be .5^23 or 1 in 8,388,608. While not perfect, it should fall outside of a reasonable doubt, especially considering things like age, location, alibi, etc. Hurray for science!

Oh, and thank you for the information.
