This is the Trump supporter in a nutshell: When confronted with facts, the topic changed.

they ALL do this, and they do it all the time.  when you point out a trump lie or mistake, the trumpers ALWAYS change the subject and/or immediately blame Obama/Hillary.  there's a pathological avoidance of admitting that trump is a massive f*cktard, even when evidence is shoved up their noses the trumpers refuse to accept a reality they'd prefer didn't exist.

the socopathic game designer/writer in me wonders what would happen if we rigged a die hard trumper's favorite genitalia to a car battery and shocked them every time they defended a trump lie.

and there are STILL people who insist we should give the trumpers the benefit of the doubt, try to listen to their concerns.  i'm at a loss as to why I should pretend that other people's lies, propaganda and delusions are somehow equal to my documented facts and figures and yet, they insist the trumpers can be reached and that inflicted facts on the trumpers is somehow not helpful.  if facts make you freak out to the point of becoming dangerous, then the folks pointing out the facts aren't the problem here kids.

My son and I were discussing this at dinner today. He's in high school and has a friend in his grade who became a die hard Trumptard (and we're in Canada, yay Derpers Without Borders!)
Now dad and I are lefty libs but more importantly we're scientists, and we've raised him to observe, question, and assess the quality of "facts" (why yes it does backfire on us sometimes but you do what's right, not what's easy). Anyway the kid is curious and asks his friend...why do you like 45*, what has he done that's good, what about these bad things?
Answers are the same for a teenage Canadian living in the city as they are for an adult rustbelt republican. Business good, terrorism bad, blah blah blah. When my son brings up countering facts the goalposts move until it's reduced to b..b..but Hillary! (he didn't quite understand WTF that was about so we had an interesting discussion about deflection).
There really does seem to be a cult-like effect in play. Some people have simply made up their minds that Donnie Dotard is king and neither facts nor shooting someone on 5th Ave nor being smacked by the angry noodley appendage of the FSM itself will change their minds.

You don't try to talk about facts with someone who's proud of their ignorance and aggressively defends it.  It has gone beyond wilful ignorance and blindness.  It is now part of their identity and will take it as an attack on themselves.

If they're just now figuring this out, they're at least a year late. I still remember arguing with my future M-I-L about why Trump sucked, and pointing out his massive flaws. None of it mattered. It boiled down to racism and "he speaks for the little people". No, no he doesn't. He can violate women, he can lie to their faces about tax reform, he can convince them that taking away their health insurance is a good thing, goshdarnit!

How does that phrase go? The greatest trick the devil pulled was convincing people he didn't exist. Well, Trump is their devil, and he fleeced them good.

It's not just the trumpers I'm sick of. It's the journalists writing headlines as if they haven't known for decades that Il Douche is what he is and will never change. Both groups lie through their teeth by pretending that he is something entirely other than what he is.

It appears the only solution in both cases is to wait for them to die off.

I have far too much experience of this. My mum is quite a difficult person and has some very bad habits in how she interacts with people. If you try and expose one, and back her into a logical corner, she will throw a tantrum over how mean you are (for daring to say anything negative to her), and get up and leave the room, before she will ever acknowledge and recognise what you're saying.

Because
1: They have been gerrymandered into having a disproportionate say in their state government and in House elections.
2: They vote religiously, because Republicans have spent 50 years telling them voting R is the only thing keeping society from disintegrating.

You can't reason someone out of a position that they didn't reason themselves into. I again reference creationism. The deceptive thing is that you can ask someone for reasons and they'll give them. That doesn't actually mean those are the things that led them to their position. People do more post-hoc rationalizing than reasoning but usually aren't aware of it. That's a good lesson for your son.

Further, being able to recognize what mode someone else is working in is a useful life tool (provided you keep it to yourself, different lesson). Helps to find those people who you can really get into nice deep philosophical discussion with, and those who you just greet with a fist bump. Even goes beyond that.

This is about as far as I go when forced to deal with a Trumper. I mainly just insist that they stay on the topic of conversation and I take away the deflection opportunities. So far they all get upset and walk away.

If you can't argue a point with me on its own merits just walk away, you are going to eventually.

So this article cherry picks another article that made an appearance yesterday. Jeremy Binckes should find his own material to write about.

They have essentially been forgotten about. But instead of screaming in anger, they've taken to rooting on the sidelines and overlooking the small slights that hint that Trump doesn't care about them whatsoever.

Of course. He was elected to throw a wrench into the works. If it helped, great. If not, then at least he destroyed as much as he could on the way out.

Ah class warfare. Is there anything you can't get people to do?

There are legitimate concerns held by these people. The opioid crisis. Lack of economic opportunities in many areas. Severe economic hardship for the less educated, particularly older individuals. Special interest groups holding too much sway in the government. Damage to some key industries and groups from globalization that has benefited the country but left pockets of blight in previously prosperous areas with little government assistance to forestall a clear inevitability.

The problem is that these legitimate concerns are also tied up with a lot of racist, xenophobic, irrational and unreasoned bullshiat blame games, excuses, complaints, and hatred of 'others'.

The many of the complaints are real enough and worth addressing - you probably agree with most of them. Just not with the reason they think those things happened. Or the solutions. Or who or what is to blame. Or their tactics to solve them.
