I dunno why, but the thought of two rich and powerful companies feuding over money made stateside glorifying a war we shouldn't have started in the first place just depresses the f*ck outta me.

you guys haven't made ENOUGH money off the wars in the middle east?  I don't know how much AM General makes off each Humvee they sell to the government but I'll bet its a pretty hefty profit.  Activision makes games that take the grinding terror of war in the middle east and lie about how much fun and glamorous it all is and nobody good ever dies (or if they do they just respawn).  how much money have those two companies made already?  oodles more cash than I'll ever see in this lifetime....and yet, now they're both feuding over who gets to chew over the bones of the dead for a second time.

i'm either too stoned or too sober for this shiat.  I'll figure out which on the car ride home from work later this morning.

Hands up who only bought CoD because it had humvees in it?

There's a man standing at the window of my office staring at me. Just adding that on here in case I die shortly. He's still staring. Maybe he works for Humvee.

/ AM General at least currently does  not sell to the U.S. government. Government contracts usually last a decade when it comes down to military vehicles. The U.S. government went through Oskosh  for a light combat all terrain vehicle. Not is  big and bulky and  has MRAP protection and is a hybrid-diesel.
Remember with the Iraq war when the soldier mentioned to Rumsfeld about lack of armor on the Humvees?
Well, some second generation ones had to be shipped back to the states to have retro-fitted to shield for IEDS. Dad was a mechanic for the company for twenty some years before he was permanently  laid-off.
/Now has another job at the airport work on GSE equipment and fueler trucks

One of the owners of the LLC is Ronald Perelman. The asshole that  messed with Marvel in the 90's and created the bankruptcy issues and the comic bubble.

Seems to me there should be a pretty big grey area when it comes to portraying actual military hardware. Or if anyone has the right to sue it'd be the government.

They should be happy. The only people I ever see driving the consumer version are soccer moms.

Also, do the Humvees in the game blow up a lot or something? That's a lot of free advertising to a demographic full of potential customers who want one of them things in that video game they play.

No one liked CoD Infinite, which didn't have them.

Or maybe it did, I didn't play it.

That actually would work against Activision's interests, because money that their customers spend on Humvees is money that they are not spending to open in-game lootboxes.

Didn't the Hummer brand get sold to a Chinese company in the bankruptcy of GM? So is a Chinese company complaining about the theft of brand imagery?

If Humvee thinks that Call of Duty only made so much money because of them they're idiots.

Meh, the CoD people need to abide by trademark law.  It's that simple.  If some game started using something of mine that I designed, built, and trademarked I'd be pretty miffed.

Wonder if Sikorsky and others will follow suit.

They need to get the appropriate permissions, but to imply that these games sold primarily because they featured humvees is farking idiot.

They don't actually think any such thing. They see a pay day, and with their vehicles no longer being purchased by the US military, and nobody wanting to buy the consumer version, they really, really want that pay day.

I'd be willing to bet this is some kind of legit genericized trademark issue (think Xerox, Band-Aid, Kleenex) where the company didn't do their damned homework to check if Humvee was just a nickname for HMMWVs or if it had actually been trademarked. Dumb on Activision but hardly nefarious. They'll probably just issue a patch to any surviving/supported games to rename them into Asshole Jeep Wannabes or something.

Will the M-4 makers and Michael Bay want a cut for the weapons and 'splosions?

I'm not sure how it would be trademarked.  It came from the Department of Defense.  They wanted a High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle and put out a contract for it.  AM General bid on the HMMWV contract and won.  I'm sure Humvee came from some random soldier in procurement who was tired of saying H-M-M-W-V three hundred times a day.

I know you jest but the AR receiver specs is now public domain so now you know why everyone and their dog makes ARs. The first M16s became antiques a couple years ago.

Da fark are you talking about? CoD doesn't take place in either Iraq of Afghanistan.
As for "glorifying" it's pretty hellish and your character dies (permanently, and there's no way around it).
Anyway, it's a fictional Arab country with the actual villain being a Russian ultra-nationalist.

I guess I was wrong, but I thought that things paid for by the tax payers were not able to copywritten. Also, why is my browser telling me copywritten is not a word?

By that argument you should be able to get Microsoft Windows for free.

What anyone 'thinks' is a moot point.   The only relevant concept here is legality.
And your point is all the more reason that Activision was stupid for not getting the rights.

It wasn't developed using taxpayer money like military vehicles/weapons. That was what I was trying to mean.

NB, there's a difference between "copyright" and "copywrite". You were looking for "copyrighted".

Also, this isn't a copyright case, they're suing for trademark infringement.

Ok, right on both counts. My brain was not firing on all one cylinder it seems to have these days. I understand now it's on the name, not the hardware. That clears up a lot.
