Obsession is a young man's game, and Roy was obsessed with this aircraft.

This was the tragic result of an obsession.

But he only gave up one hit.

Flying like a test pilot is dangerous, especially for someone that has no business flying like a test pilot.

At least he had the decency to do it over water where he couldn't hurt others when the inevitable happened.

I can't even count the number of times I've seen this happen in skydiving. When high performance canopies really caught on and people started showboating flying your ass into the ground was distressingly common. For a few years something like 50-60% of fatalities were occurring under a good canopy. And water is worse, it's very, very difficult to gauge your altitude. I only had a couple seaplane lessons, but evidently flaring is a bad idea.

True, but plenty of boaters out nearby, as evidenced by video taken. :/

Altitude, speed, brains.  You need at least two.

My meager-by-MLB standards $400k term life policy has an benefits exclusion for death while piloting an aircraft. I wonder why?

Roy with his wife just filmed a promo video for the aircraft company  -- an independent startup named Icon. very eerie to watch.

This seems kinda bizarre yet all too common at the same time. Crash is equal parts John Denver and Thurman Munson.

Two I remember hearing in person were:

"The sky above you is of no use"

"Altitude is your gas tank"

A couple of friends of mine who are pilots say the most dangerous time with a new aircraft is when you just get it because you get all excited but don't yet really know how it flies.

One was just saying a couple weeks ago he was looking at a plane but then he noticed it had some of its skin held on by pop rivets and passed.

He told his dad that flying his plane was like flying a fighter jet.

Yes. a dramatic decrease in elevation is what happens when you crash.

/We're gonna have to come in pretty low to land this thing.

I saw something earlier today where a couple of sports radio guys were ripping Doc for this. I thought it was trashy of them to do that, but I hadn't seen the video yet. Now that I have, I hate to say they had a point because how they said things was poor; but they had a point. Doc is Darwin Award candidate after that.

I commented a bit in the other thread about this that these type of planes can be flown with Sport Pilot licences which are far easier to get than regular PPLs. Twenty hours flying is all you need and you can then fly the thing by yourself and even carry a passenger.
Having seen the video I'll just add that judging your height when flying over water can be very tricky even for experienced pilots.

3 out of 7 is a good day at the plate but not good for the number planes that crash.  I doubt he was doing lines like Jose Fernandez but the way he would sweat on the mound now makes me wonder if he had a secret problem.

I dunno about that. There are lots of stupid things people do that deserve death. Murder, playing with toasters in the bathtub, suicide, raping kids, hot potting at Yellowstone, stealing copper from live transformers, etc....

cybrwzrd: hot potting at Yellowstone,

I was at Yellowstone I think 2 days after that kid last June/July went off-trail at Porkchop/Popcorn Geyser, whatever, I think Lower Norris Basin.  when we got to Norris, about 3-4 days later, the walkway to where the kid died was still closed, and htey had a ranger there to make sure no looky-loos or whatever went there.  I asked the guy, naively, "so is this still closed because of the accident?" (just to see what the party line was, i knew the obvious.)

He goes, "yup.  technically, it is a 'recovery' mission, but.......they ain't gonna recover nuthin'."

chemical-laden water that exceeds the boiling point and human flesh don't mix, kiddies....

Whether that plane is intrinsically safe or not, it can't be ignored that it is specifically marketing itself as a plane in which to do this kind of stupid shiat.  If you want to fly, get a plane.  If you want to kill yourself doing something stupid, get an Icon.

Also, his wife should have burned that goddamn thing after he pulled similar stunts in it with her as a passenger.

2017-11-09 11:55:45 AM
Wait, this was an Icon?  It's basically a hobby aircraft, jet ski with wings.  Top speed can't be much more than 100 mph or so, AND it's got a CAPS system.  The whole point of the thing is to be idiot proof.  This could be a Darwin winner.

That incident made him leave the FAA and move to Philly. Became a dirty cop, his son got killed. Last I heard, he was in semi-retirement as a security consultant for a chain of chicken restaurants in Albuquerque.

Idiot proof or not if you fly into something at a hundred miles an hour you will die. And that that speed water might as well be concrete. We build things to be more idiot proof and the universe builds better idiots. I doubt this guy was an idiot but he was certainly lacking in training thanks to the Sports Licence which gives you your licence after only twenty hours of flying.

/But then you get highly trained people like that B52 display pilot of crashed while doing a stupid stunt.

Well, sorta. had to look up what you're referring to, but it appears he flew it into a hill.  Pilot error is the initial finding.

I agree that he didn't deserve to die, but his actions were those of one with a death wish in my mind. He was a novice pilot performing maneuvers that are best left to the experts.

I feel bad for his family. I feel bad for his ex-teammates, all of whom seemingly loved the guy. I feel bad for his friends outside of baseball as well. I just can't feel bad for Halliday himself.
