Never saw it.  It looked interesting, though.  I assume it turns out Domnhall Gleeson and Bill Night were the same person.

I'd hate to quote our President.  But this is sad.

Not sad because so many powerful people are finally being called on their bullshiat, but sad because this sort of thing was so normal for so long.

It's sort of like how everyone knew that Kennedy was a womanizer.  But no one would DARE say anything about it.  It was the norm in the 1960's.  How was that EVER the norm?!  How did the culture ever get to that point?

And everyone KNEW it was happening.  There is an entire pron series dedicated to the "casting couch".  What on Earth do you think that was making fun of?!  But though everyone knew about it, no one was able to do anything about it.

Here we are 30-40 years down this messy road, and everyone from Variety to the Oscars are calling this some sort of "scandal", like it didn't exist before last week.

Perhaps it's time to tear the whole thing down and start over again.

A little misogyny. A dash of sexism. A pinch of antisemitism. And someone threw in Bill Clinton as a garnish. A perfect hate stew.

The more glamorous the industry, the seedier things are behind the scene.  It's not who's next or just an accepted practice, it's been going on so long it's become institutionalized.  Outing the offenders isn't going to change much, but it's a start.

Hell, Kevin Smith lampshaded it in Jay & Silent Bob, and it wasn't exactly some well-kept secret. The reason why this is all coming out now is because of... well, it's because of Trump. When the Access Hollywood tape came out and everyone shrugged their shoulders and voted for him anyway, that was the catalyst for a whole industry of actresses to finally say "fark it, I don't care anymore." And come forward with allegations.

Actually, I don't think it has much to do with Trump at all.  There was an investigation by the NYPD of Weinstein's creepiness, completely with an audio recording.  A couple NY-based reporters got ahold of that, and wrote stories, and that's what triggered the snowball rolling down the mountain.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.  How did it "get" to that point?  It has always been at that point.  Only now it seems some are more willing to call people out on their shiat.  It's an extremely slow progression, but progress nonetheless.

I would expect Whedon and Tarantino to be among the next, people keep "joking" about their obsession with feet and how they make private tapes of the actresses they work with.

I don't know that it was "always" that way.  Well, if it was, then perhaps what you're saying is true.  The Empire is crumbling, as it were.  And that's a good thing.

Yeah, but those two are not "Hollywood", and there was a period of something like six months between their actions and the current batch.

Even within Hollywood, you could say it started with Bill Cosby (a year or two ago), or Polanski in 1977.

Simply put, this batch of accusations started with the stories about Weinstein in the New Yorker and New York Times, period.

Yeah, it was just "the way things were." Modern folks don't understand just how many unspoken assumptions there were because decent people didn't talk about certain stuff in public .

But for instance it was assumed that every boss was boning their secretary unless she was a pretty horrid pig or was Super prim and religious.

Polanski got away with it and the whole news cycle has ignored him for a good long time.  Cosby is recent enough to remember and could still be retried.  I'm guessing they figured they could get away with it thanks to the Cosby narrative.

Remember Cosby was well known as a rapist in comedy circles.  The whole thing started when he criticized another comedian who said "at least I'm not a rapist" and the rest of the country simply stopped and demanded the rest of the story.

I'm wondering how much effect the internet has.  Simply put, "the media" expects to get its information from specific people.  Annoy them, and somebody else will break all your stories.  So certain people become gatekeepers of information and gain tons of power.  Then along comes twitter and half the starlets in Hollywood point out what's going on until the media can't ignore it anymore.

Just being "King of Comedy" or "King of Hollywood" isn't a perfect "get out of jail free".  And while Trump may get out of any accusations about groping teens in dressing rooms, Mueller may have a few things to say about his Russian connections (I wouldn't be surprised if he had interviews with everyone in that dressing room.  Leaving that on the table seems foolish).

Shirley Temple claimed that an MGM producer unzipped his trousers and exposed himself to her during their first meeting in 1940 when she was 12. Errol Flynn had an extensive history of statutory rape. Joan Collins wasn't cast as Cleopatra because she wouldn't sleep with a studio head. Yes it has always been that way.

Yeah, despite having a rough start with bad reviews and low numbers on the first few episodes, I now am seeing a bunch of critics saying that the Orville has turned out to be a better "Star Trek" show than Star Trek: Discovery.

I don't think it was Trump. Or O'Reilly. Or Ailes. I do believe politics played a small part, in that Weinstein was a huge Dem backer and the Dems didn't want to appear hypocritical by ignoring this. But I think the biggest thing was the #MeToo movement. For days, thousands of victims, women AND men, came forward. Even Andy Rapp and Harry Dreyfuss credited the movement for creating an atmosphere where victims wouldn't be instantly denounced, slut-shamed, black-balled, or ridiculed, so they felt secure enough to come forward.

There's always strength in numbers. It just takes that first person to come forward and weather the initial backlash. Then the dominoes start to fall.

One of whom is Ronan Farrow, who sides with his mother in the dispute about Woody Allen abusing Mia's kids. So this was kind of personal to him. And NBCUniversal (Comcast) wouldn't publish his story, so he took it to the New Yorker. Apparently the New York Times had been pursuing a parallel story.
