FTA: Robby the Robot ranks among the single most iconic props in science fiction film history and arguably is the cinema's most famous and instantly recognizable robot.

Baloney. Show a kid a picture of C-3PO and a picture of Robby and they will identify Threepio every time. Heck, do that with someone MY age (early forties) and you will probably get the same results.

I think the difference is that Robby extends beyond just a single film series.  He would show up all over the place.  Kids today probably wouldn't recognize him, but for a time, he was every bit as recognizable as Threepio.  Also, it says "ranks among the single most...", not "is the single most..."

C-3PO's not a robot, he's a droid.  Nyah.

It's a pretty easy age divider.  For people under age 40, Robby is the basis for a set of trivia questions for sci-fi aficionados.  For people over 40 or 45, it was likely a major part of their childhood.

60 gallons? That's almost enough to make it through an entire workday at the Fark office.

Half a day if the severs are jacked.

The entire "hardware" of Forbidden Planet made repeated appearances on The Twilight Zone, used together--the saucer, the uniforms, the equipment, etc.  Though I only recall Robby appearing in one episode, alone, as the final project of an eccentric inventor.

Great movie.  Great effects, cast, and one of the best re-tellings of Shakespear's Tempest.  It holds up tremendously well.

Just browsing through the rest of that auction, there is some pretty cool stuff, including Columbo's raincoat and some original Disney animation cels.

Surprised to see so many awards for sale. I guess that's one way to get an Emmy.
