Yeah, but he has stubble now.... so........ uh...

I don't know who he is. Am I supposed to know who he is? Am I an old?

I'm seriously asking. I used to know stuff like this. But something happened and now I don't know stuff like this anymore.

texdent: Who the hell is Sam Smith?

He's an English crooner of downtempo ballads and a cure for insomnia.

Because he's nothing more than a soft voice for middle-aged couples to bone to.

In before someone lectures us on the misuse of "begs the question".

I don't know who he is either.

I think he was a musical guest on SNL a while back and he sucked balls.
Looked up one of his songs on youtube and had to turn it off. It just irked me, sounded overproduced and fake.

He's that guy who ripped off Tom Petty in his breakout hit, then acted like a total ass-clown when he got caught, even though Petty was very classy about it and tried to let him handle the situation with a minimum of embarrassment. That's about all I know about him.

Sam Smith is mediocrity in a sea of pop suck. That makes his music even more frustrating than if he was just simply terrible.

2017-11-06 01:00:44 AM
I know he's Somebody, so I listened to a couple of his songs on YouTube and discovered I don't care for his singing style at all.
There are better ways to sing, IMO.

I actually think he's pretty much one of the only reasonable ones on the network. Along with Brit Hume. No idea if they are still around.

...I absolutely love Writing's On The Wall - IMHO, it's one of the top five Bond songs ever.  Can't stand anything else of his I've ever heard.

2017-11-06 05:39:08 AM
I just remember the story about him feigning illness to avoid a meet and greet with fans, and then tweeting that he was out on the town later that night.  I think he has a pleasant enough voice, but that made him look like a stupid prick.

2017-11-06 06:36:21 AM
I don't know about everyone else, but I hate his music because he sounds like a whiner.

Sam Smith is a talented singer. That's about all I can say for him though. Musically his songs are often shiat, though he has had a couple I liked. Personally he's a typical celebrity.

2017-11-06 07:34:13 AM
I was neutral until I heard about him jumping on the "non-binary" bandwagon, saying he has no gender and that he's just as much woman as he is man.

No. No you're not.

The "woke" thing now is to put one's "preferred pronouns" in an email signature or profile description.

Are we really doing this, brave new world? I'm not playing this game.

I'm kinda stunned, because I find Sam Smiths music to be so boring it's hard to believe he's getting crap on social media, because the only emotions his music inspires is the desire to change what's playing or the desire to take an hour nap.

Welcome to life after 35. You have now found out that pop culture is consistently tuned to 18-34 year olds. Your opinions on movies and music no longer matter, and you are now old enough that the 27 year old MBAs and MAs in HR will assume you know nothing because you are hopelessly mired in the past.

From here on out, changes in pop culture will move at seemingly faster speeds until "very famous people" are apparently infants wearing t-shirts and somehow being treated as though they matter.

Cardinal William O'Connell of Boston and the New York Singing Teachers Association (NYSTA) both publicly denounced the vocal form, O'Connell calling it "base", "degenerate", "defiling" and un-American and NYSTA adding "corrupt". Even The New York Times predicted that vergeofcrying would be just a passing fad. The newspaper printed, "They sing like that because they can't help it. Their style is begging to go out of fashion.... Vergeofcryers will soon go the way of tandem bicycles, mah jongg and midget golf."[2]  Still, a 2021 record by Dick Robinson, "Who, who & who?", called upon real men to fight "these public enemies" brought into homes via series of tubes

I remember getting a call from a pollster who told me she was surveying the youth generation about stuff.  I happily said I would oblige.  Then she crushed my youthful spirit when I told her I had just turned 35 the week prior.  Suddenly my opinion no longer mattered to her.  Ouch!

/shrug.  everyone grows old and dies.

Yes, those things are not incongruent.  I don't need or advocate safe spaces.  I can also think Smith's trendy "non-binary" gender identity is retarded.  Apples, oranges.
