If it's gotta be scotch I can't help you but Buffalo Trace is a decent bourbon and is under $40 almost everywhere.  $25ish here in Ohio.  It's no Maker's Mark but it's worth the price.

Good luck on that. My favorite inexpensive peaty scotch, Laphroiag 10 year, crossed the $50 mark at Bevmo.

Do you have a Costco membership? I sometimes see a few options under $50, especially if you're ok with blended whiskeys.

You may be able to find the Templeton Rye 6-year for $40.  It's worth its price.  Same with Willett but you're looking at $45 there.

Not a true Scotch, nor a Tennessee whiskey, but if you were to describe whiskey to someone who has never had it, this is what they would imagine.

You can get the Four Roses small batch for under $40. Perfectly acceptable bourbon whiskey. You'll never go wrong with George Dickel, either, and that's even less expensive.

If you're specifically looking for Scotch...well, the pickings are slimmer.

I've gone back to the bourbon of my serious-alcoholic days, Jim Beam Black. I drank it then because it was cheap, but I'm drinking it (in moderation) now because it's damn good bourbon. Still ~$20 where I am.

I knew you were a man of discerning tastes. George Dickel is terrific stuff that deserves a lot more respect than it gets.

Depending on your location you may be able to pick up Laphroaig 10 year or Quarter Cask for around that amount, both excellent choices.

I am not sure exactly about prices in the US, but there should be plenty of good whiskies at that price range:
Glenlivet 12 year old for example shouldn't cost more than $40 but still is is a good single malt
https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/the-glenlivet-12-year-old-whisky/

I am also a fan of Auchentoshan, which should be available for under $40.
Speyburn is also an underrated Scotch that is not expensive but very well balanced.

I think a lot of the famous single malts have their basic 10 or 12 year old bottles under $40 and they are all perfectly fine whiskies, Bowmore, Glenfiddich, Macallan, Glenmorangie etc.

What kind of taste/style do you like?

For decent scotch under $40, The Glenlevitt is a good, mild way to go.

If you want decent scotch, you don't put a price on that shiat.

Glenmorangie for the win.

If you really want to impress them, mix it with ice and club soda like I do.

A buddy let me try his Yamazaki 18; since then, I get that or the 12 when bars have it. While I don't disagree with the general sentiment of your post, I feel obligated to point out that the price point of this whiskey is awfully far north of Subby's requested range.

Lol. Back in grad school, I had a friend that was a visiting student from Greece. He routinely ordered scotch and coke at the local bars. The looks on the bartenders' faces was truly a sight to behold.

I'm quite the scotch whiskey snob, and I can tell you that Suntory is pretty damn good for the price.  Way better than plenty of scotches that are 50% more expensive.

I'd never do it, especially not with a single malt.  But whisky neat with a Coke back is pretty satisfying, so I can understand it.  Kind of.

Buffalo Trace, Dickel, Four Roses, Glenfiddich.

Don't sneer at the last one just because its popular and easily available. It's a pretty good bottle for the dollar.

Bulleit. The Rye is fantastic and usually ~$30. The 10 year bourbon is good too and can be had for ~$40.

/YMMV depending on the state tax.

any single malt under $40 is probably not worth buying.  A good blend as has been stated before is grouse.  If you canny get it, then Grants is a good choice.  It is made by the same people who make glenfiddich, one of best.  Or just pony up the money and buy Macallen.

My goto for cheaper tasty Scotch is Highland Park 12. Actually like it better than the Highland Park 18. Has a bit of smoke/peat though.

WhiskeyBender ^ has it dialed in with Tullemore Dew. In the mornings after killing a bottle with a friend, we call it Tullemore Don't. But we do it again.

Ardbeg 10 yr is a good entry level scotch
Bulleit is a solid bourbon
If you can find High West Campfire... You'll be pleasantly surprised!

shiat, I definitely missed the boat on that back in the day. These days, $100 for a bottle of the 12 year is a great deal. IF you can find it, which is the bigger problem. Last I checked (about a year ago), new bottles were selling so quickly, the stores didn't even bother putting them on the shelf.
