I grabbed a 20 lb snapping turtle out of the street the other day and put itn a plastic tub.  You know turtles release water they keep in their anal gland as an offense?

Phew, the car smelled horrible.

I was in line at a Mcdonalds when he went trucking by.

I brought him home, and my condos have a pond so I released him there.  I see him every couple of days.

I'll see your snapping turtle and raise you 2 Sirens (Siren lacertina).  We have a drainage pond at work, and there are some ditches between it and the parking lot that have PVC pipes leading ot the big pond.  When we get a ton of rain, water levels will rise and fill the ditches from both the run off and the pond level rising.  Get gambusia mostly in the ditches, occasionally a blue gill.  2 weeks ago just after the Hurricane I saw 2 of the sirens.  Went out to our teaching zoo and grabbed a keeper and a few students, some nets, a bukket, etc. and we went and caught them and re-released into the big pond.

I like these videos because they show that animals are smarter than we give them credit for. That lizard may not ponder the intricacies of the universe, but he damn well knew "man-thing can get me back to shore".

During the rainy season I keep a tub in my trunk for that reason. I probably moved 3 or 4 this year.

I sound a lot of time in/around rivers and streams. I've rescued snakes, lamprey, beaver, etc. I've rescued bats and skunks. But I don't think I'd have the gumption to rescue an iguana. They're terrifying, malevolent, and have essentially evolved to be walking disease vectors.
In other words, get off my kayak.

They've been around for 50 years and the wildlife authorities see no big impact, they don't compete with any other Florida reptiles because they are herbivores that don't go after crops (and that can climb to the top of kudzu vine to munch out of livestock reach), aren't dangerous, and most of them freeze to death when an occasional cold Florida winter rolls through.  KInd of like squirrels that don't gnaw and invade attic or eat birds or cuss at your dog.

Don't kid yourself, if the situation was reversed, that iguana would have let that dude drown - because iguanas are cold blooded, man.

Yes, but consider the other side of the Karmic Coin.     What kind of inhuman monster was he in a past life that it was reborn as an iguana, lost in the middle of the ocean.

Terrifying!  One of the Rangers in the Tulum Reserve scolded me when I shared my hot dog with one.  She told me "No comen carne, Sr,"  I told her "heck yeah they do, look at him chow down!"

Invasive to S. Florida but not to America.

reminds me of a crazy video of two locals in Afghanistan sitting in the shade while its almost 130 degrees in the sun. then, in the distance you can see something scampering toward them, and its running really fast. turns out it was an iguana who rushed under the rock to escape the heat and you can see his skin sizzling with steam as he plunks his whole body down on the sand breathing heavy.

dunno what the locals were saying in their language but it ended before i presumed they were going to cook and eat it. but still, it was one of the most badass things, to see a lizard so desperate to escape the sun 's heat.

Thanks to this man's act of kindness and TLC, this lucky iguana has learned an important lesson: Don't go chasing waterfalls. Stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to.
