Yeah but that's generic candidates. Republicans are just assuming their candidate will be anti-poor, anti-abortion, and want to destroy the environment. Wait until they find out that the actual candidate, in addition, is also racist, pro-nuclear war, and in favor jailing journalists.

Swoon.

This seems to apply to all Republican candidates nowadays:

It doesn't help that Democrats pick the candidates with the worst personalities, seemingly by committee.

We haven't even had the 2017 elections yet. Can we get through that first before prognosticating on 2018?

/can we even get through one year without the President persisting in campaign mode?

The Supreme Court says he exists, but that depends on the standard used.

Democrats: "Ooooh, woe, why don't the Democrats pick better candidates?"
Also Democrats: [Relentless negativity towards everything having to do with their own party]
Charismatic candidates: "F*** dealing with that crap."

And to preempt - yes, there IS a difference between "I wish the Democrats would do a better job at X" vs just whining about how horrible awful very very bad no good they are every time the D word is brought up.

Until this gets fixed, it won't matter, which is why it will get fixed over the GOP's dead body:

The way I like to think about gerrymandering is to think of these districts as separate legal entities - counties, or states, or countries, or whatever - that are unfriendly to each other. That map looks farken stupid. If this were an independent nation that had a trade dispute with its neighbors, it could only ship goods along that skinny vertical corridor on the far west side. In fact based on this map I can't even tell if they're connected at all it's so narrow there.

I don't care which party did this one. Looking at it I can't tell. It's clearly shiat and the people responsible should go to federal prison.

2017-10-18 07:32:03 PM
Odds are that after the elections next year we will still have a GOP controlled House and Senate. Don't kid yourself.

1. Everybody hates congress except for their own congressman or senator.
2. The derp is strong in this sorry nation.
3. But her e-mails.

Need I go on?

2017-10-18 07:32:04 PM
There are two things I'm looking at with a bit more interest than this:

1) Local/state races going towards Democrats
2) Republicans losing faith and staying home thanks to Trump destroying their resolve

The first one seems to be going fairly well -- there's a lot of Democrats picking up seats and fighting there is vital -- and the second one seems to be a bit iffy.  I see a lot of push online about Republicans but I'm not sure if that's Russian interference or not.  Either way, this is pretty good with about a year to go.  The more Trump fails, the better 2018 will be for Democrats...but nothing should be taken for granted.

Guntram Shatterhand: The more Trump fails,

Well there's failing and shiatting yourself. He's excellent at the latter.

The stock market is at record highs. He's standing up to third world dictators threatening to annihilate us  instead of continuing a policy of appeasement and diplomacy, he's questioning a stupid Iran fake treaty, he's nominating decent judges, so he's doing plenty, as he shiats himself. He may get a tax reduction deal done and possibly some chip away at the failing ObummerCare before the end of next year.

It's the economy, stupid. Wasn't it Clinton who said that? If the economy is chugging along come election time, you folks can drown in your own bitter tears. People vote their wallets.

Well, we'll see how predictive that is.
In October 2009, the ABC News poll showed Democrats leading 51-39.
2010 didn't work out that way for them.  Of course the Democrats were in power and they can potshots now without leading and without getting nailed for 4 years in a row of trillion dollar deficits, now in the rear view mirror.

The image is of Illinois's 4th district, and it's gerrymandered that way to be a mostly Hispanic district.

The people in the district actually have more in common with each other culturally (they're of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage) than they do with the people in the middle.

FlashHarry: Have you met my friend Gerry? Gerry Mander?

Flash, Gerrymandering actually opens the Gerrymandering party to large defeats with small swings.

The goal is to pack a lot of Democrats into safe districts and have as many Republican districts but it's mathematically impossible to have a large number of "safe" republican districts in states where they're not in a large majority from a numerical point of view.

So, in a "normal" year Gerrymandering does wonders...2018...

Yes, but that's the house...there's no point, for instance, in impeaching if it will die in the senate. And Trump is already getting nothing done, so the house isn't such a big prize.
