This is the first Star Wars movie I'm not foaming at the mouth to see. I'll see it of course but I'm not that psyched about it. I don't like the idea of someone else playing Han. I hope he doesn't do what they usually do, try to do an impression of the original actor.

My biggest concern with this movie is that they'll go the way of the prequels and SHOW us everything that was briefly mentioned in the Originals.

The Kessel Run
Dumping his shipment for Jabba
Lando's little maneuver at the battle of Taanab

I just hope since they felt this movie was necessary, the story will at least be original

And in th EU (which they don't have to follow), Chewie has a life-debt to Han so might might explain that too.

I don't think they can do that one because it obviously happened very recently before ANH, like maybe days or weeks since he had bounty hunters and Jabba himself on his ass.

It's sad too to go that route. If you had to make a Han prequel for name recognition, all you need is a farking Han/Lando buddy picture where it is Smokey/Bandit in Space on the run after a big heist. Both get laid and Lando finds a goddamn cape. It's not hard people. It's fricking Han/Lando and a trucking/road trip element. It's so hard to mess that up

Disney: Okay, we killed off Han and replaced him with a shrieking Pokemon. This might piss off people. Marketing says the soulless, dead-eyed homunculus works great with the kids, not so much with the original SW crowd.

Marketing: Well, we could 'bring Han back' and scratch that itch with those wanting More Han(tm), but let's bring him back as a younger version. A prequel. You know, like Young Indiana Jones.

Me: Guys, I'm right here in the room. I can hear you.

Or a Lethal Weapon type buddy movie showcasing their brief stint as cops who play by their own set of rules. Until the mayor took their badges and they had to resort to smuggling and gambling.

Maybe it'll defy expectations and do what the latest 6 Star Wars movies (staring with ROTJ) didn't do and not suck.

Star Wars is a franchise running off the success of the first two movies. And you know it.

It would have petered out like Star Trek did. The last two SW movies were well received and the internet isn't shy about tearing down a movie they don't like.

I'm not too old to watch that shiat. I'm in.

I don't have particularly high hopes for this movie but I expect it will be alright. I'm pretty disappointed that they seem to have decided that all the rest of the anthology movies will be about characters we already know instead of giving us more stuff like Rogue One, because that movie was fantastic. Star Wars has a great setting with a ton of potential, and even just the war between the rebellion and the Empire has a ton of stories in it spanning the whole galaxy and the entire duration of the war, there's no need to stick to characters we already know.

Rogue One felt the need to literally over-run the beginning of A New Hope to the point that it essentially retconned several characters entirely.  I would not be surprised if they do the same shiat here and the last scene is literally them in the cantina with a dude in a brown robe.

Honestly, at this point there is only one thing that's 100% certain about the Han Solo movie, and that's that's it's going to be complete and utter garbage.  Like, the Donald Trump of Star Wars movies.  There is literally zero chance of it even being "okay" at this point, right now it can only vainly aspire to maybe manage to barely be as good as the prequels... and more likely much worse, since at least the prequels were bad and original.

// They had the premise right with the Lego Movie guys -- either you retcon the character to the point of being unrelated to the original character, in which case the name recognition is a liability instead of an asset, or you have to write Han as a complete sociopath and unrepentant criminal, as he was at the beginning of Star Wars before his character development.  The only way to have a main character who's an asshole and not alienate the audience is for that shiat to be a comedy... like, a comedy-comedy, not an action-comedy leaning heavily on the former.

My biggest problem with prequels is they add ham-fisted foreshadowing.  References to ending up flying farmers around like a shuttle pilot, or "like you're ever going to rescue a princess!" That kind of crap.

Tag and Bink are in the film so I want to support it but man 2 SW films having some kind of director-producer fallout and massive reshoots just doesn't bode well. R1 should have been a disaster. Still waiting for the Kenobi film though.

Tag and Bink are from a few Dark Horse comics that were meant to jokingly explain all the silly dumb shiat that happens in the movies, and generally just to fark around in the Star Wars universe. They're a fun read and obviously in no way meant to be canon.

Force Awakens is a steaming pile but Rogue One is just fine.   In fact its tied with ESB for 2nd best after Star Wars (it wasn't A New Hope in 1977 so it isn't now).

The reason Rogue One is good is it mostly leaves out what makes the rest of Star Wars suck, the farking space wizards.   When they are around nothing else matters, so overpowered so they can only be countered by other space wizards.

Yes. It's embarrassingly bad.

but Rogue One is just fine.

Yes, I agree (and stand corrected)

In fact its tied with ESB for 2nd best after Star Wars

I respectfully disagree. The correct order is:
#1 ESB
#2 Star Wars
#3 Rogue One

(it wasn't A New Hope in 1977 so it isn't now).

Goddamn right. Thank you.

I'm not sure it's because they're overpowered. I think it's because they're morally black and white. The most interesting characters are always shades of grey.

Ill settle for too close to call or 3 way tie.  Back in the day I would have said ESB no question, the more it ages the more I think SW holds up better as pure entertainment esp after seeing both again in the last week.    Rogue One succeeds because it makes me feel like a kid again watching SW for the first time.

I'm not sure it's because they're overpowered. I think it's because they're morally black and white. The most interesting characters are always shades of grey.

Indeed this is another aspect of why I find them boring but having a whole tier of character that makes everything else irrelevant reduces those other aspects to window dressing.

well, they market the shait out of this stuff.
It's getting so you can predict human behavior.

Kenny Chesney is playing Pittsburgh next June.
Wanna bet there will be trouble?
Drunken rednecks.
Everywhere.
Littering, drinking, fighting.
Why? Are these people farmers?
Is this really country music?
Or is it an industry that celebrates ignorance in humanity.
The sheer stupidity of the typical country music fan is enough to predict that a critical mass of them will create havoc, and you can plan on it.

Just as you can be sure that when a story is told, and retold, and retold, and retold, for profit, as is this franchise, that every single marketable item will be mass produced, beaten to death, pirated, stolen, and pop up at yard sales, like some "rare collectible" item.

It's sad.
