Olay, when the police find a body of indeterminate age and gender and you start telling reporters it could be your missing friend... you need help. That body could be any number of missing Omars.

Well, it wasn't in the water too long. Dropping a sealed barrel in the water was the problem, a few holes would have kept it on the bottom.

Johnny Roselli, Vegas / Hollywood mafiosi enforcer.

Cut in half, stuffed in barrel, set out to sea off the Florida coast.

Against the odds, barrel gets spotted and brought to shore.

Disappeared (and killed) two weeks before he was to testify to the Church Commission on the JFK hit.

Pure coincidence, of course.

at least for a little while. good chance gases inside the gastrointestinal tract would have made the body bouyant. removing or slicing the GI tract would prevent the cadaver from surfacing in water.

No holes wasn't the problem. It was dumping it at all. Never underestimate the laziness of people.

In 1967, dude stuffed this girl he'd impregnated during an affair in a steel barrel.

Left it next to his garage. House was sold more than once in the intervening 30+ years. No one moved it because it was too heavy.

Finally, someone was trying to declutter the property, got curious, opened it up, and it was even worse than chicken in a can. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Reyna_Marroquin

Someone read Robert Littell's, "The Company" because that was how the mafia made people disappear permanently.  Guess it doesn't work so well in real life.

Mario Puzo's novel THE LAST DON has a neater solution: weld up an <ahem> "shark cage" from steel bars. Wrap inconvenient corpses in a tarp, slip them into the "cage", find a compliant fishing boat to do a night run and slip the baby and cradle and all beneath the waves. No way for that sucker to surface.

Stop normalizing putting bodies in barrels!

Apparently, pretty normal in Mexico. Except they either fill the barrel with acid or gasoline (then set it on fire.)

Check out Richard Kuklinski, in the documentary about him, and he confessed to killings they couldn't tie him to.  He stuffed a guy in a barrel, and left it sitting next to a convenience store.  It took months before anyone found the body.  Sometimes, just leaving a barrel sitting is the best way to go unnoticed.

One of those really rare and special order 56 gallon barrels? There are only two companies on the planet that can make those.

That is such an obvious clue, they should have the perp in just a few hours.
