With the massive SMALL SAMPLE SIZE caveat...
I'll take 2nd!!!
and we're gonna need a bigger bus

also: lulz Montreal at 30

/ tbf, probably too low although 5 goals for in four games is not going to get it done, however good your goalie is
// Nucks at 16 is probably too high but 3 out of 4 possible points so far is a fairly solid start!

13 years of f*cking failure at the Honda Center came to an end on Monday night.

Man was that awesome. And a shutout for Smith to boot.

I'll take DRW at 11. But it will probably go down closer to where they started (30).

FTA:

The Oilers finish below the Canucks, Kings and Golden Knights in the NHL standings.

Come now.

As much as I hate the Edmonton Oilers, and I HATEthe Oilers, that statement is just ridiculous. Maybe the Oilers finish lower than 1 of them, or maybe two if there's some sort of serious injury problems to their star players, but there's no f*cking way that the Oilers will be behind all three of them, I will take that bet in a second.

The Canucks especially. They have no idea what they are doing. They may be ok now, they will not be ok by Christmas and they will be even worse by February.

Anybody else think the Golden Knight's pre-game stuff last night was a bit... much?  We're all sympathetic, but that tribute was as heavy handed as a fat guy at a slot machine (I made that up, pretty good.)

I was all prepared to root against them, but after 3-0 in the first I gave up and switched channels.

Carrying the dreaded 1-0 lead into the 3rd period, I was just waiting for it all to unravel. Just. Waiting.

What a sick shot by Backlund to make it 2-0 and then I really started to think it might happen.

Smith was ridiculous and he had to be. Anaheim deserved better than they got, but hey, that's the way it goes.

And best of all, we're now ahead of the Ducks, Canucks, AND Oilers.

The Wild went from 4th to 25th.

What? Did the team die in a plane crash I am not aware of or something?

The whole 3rd period was just a long stretch of "come on boys, just don't do anything stupid, we're so close to a win"  Smith got his SO and we had to have a linesman take the puck away from a Duck for him.

Oil having a slow start, I'm pretty sure they are better than that. But the points all count the same now or in April, better to get them early though.

Flames took 3 penalties in the third, and one was late with like under 4 to go. I was f*ckin' stressing.

I have no illusions about finishing ahead of the Oilers, but like you say, get on em early is the best strategy.

Flames took the final wildcard spot last year and I would say we are the most in danger of slipping out of the playoff picture (except maybe San Jose).

Get ahead early. Stay ahead late.

Avalanche at 12????????? A top 20 team!!!!! Suck it teams ranked 13-31!

In all seriousness, I expect them to be bad this year but better than last year. It would take an awful lot for any team to be that bad again.

Fun time to be a Leafs fan living in Boston. In other news, I was given a new territory at work: Canada. A lot of the ISPs I have to deal with now are in Toronto. Good times.

Did you see what the Leafs did to Chicago after spotting them 2 on Monday? ...Kaner with his worst possession numbers in 9 years (minus-25 Corsi) against the Matthews line.

Yeah, that was a hilarious matchup all night,  Kane's line basically lived in their own end for the game.

Oh I was screaming at the TV for most of that period.  I was hoping we'd bury a SHG on the 6 on 4 just to stick a knife n them, but we couldn't hit the net at that point.

The Coyotes are too damn high.

Though, to be fair, the Gretzky-Messier Oilers of the 80s couldn't have won last night in Vegas.

Wow... 95% of the people in this thread completely missed the point of how they did the rankings.

hint: it has nothing to do with how good the teams actually are

It's a direct ranking of their first 2-4 games played so far without any consideration of extenuating circumstances.  So yeah, Montreal is at the bottom because they are winless and Vegas is #4 because they haven't lost yet.  The blurbs are all about extrapolating the stats gathered so far (with a miniscule sample size) over the entire season.  It's along the lines of when a team scores 2 goals in the first 5 minutes and the color announcer says "At this pace they'll score 24 by the end of the game!"  It leads to funny outcomes, but is statistically useless.

/why yes, I am fun at parties... why do you ask?

2017-10-11 04:23:57 PM
Avs at 12. I think in the long run they're closer to that than they are to 31. By which I mean 20.
People seem to forget that 2 years ago they were a bubble team that completely fell apart at the end of the season to miss the playoffs. And last year was a situation where everything that could go wrong did, resulting in an historically bad showing. I don't expect them to be a threat for the postseason, but I do think they'll surprise some people.
My one real worry about the team is Bednar. I'm not sure he's got what it takes, but I've been willing to give him a pass due to him having been a first-year coach hired late in the process for a team that had some glaring weaknesses and a couple of key injuries to make things worse. Even so, that team quit, and that never looks good on a coach. He doesn't need to make contenders of the Avs or anything stupid like that, but I'd hope he's given a short leash and let go if this team starts to wallow anywhere near the level of last season. At least flirt with .500 hockey.

/mile high standards

2017-10-11 04:25:23 PM
Phil Housley gets a long leash as he tries to integrate several new players and transition the team to a completely new system...but yeah, the Sabres have looked dreadful through 3 games.  Last place is where they belong right now.  The defense looks befuddled, and no one outside of Kane and Eichel are generating anything offensively.  Even normally smart, consistent, reliable guys like O'Reilly and Reinhart look terrible, having brainfarts left and right.

Let's see if Housley can get fix some of this and get this team on track as they head out on their west coast road trip.

2017-10-11 04:27:45 PM
On the plus side, the Sabres are finally developing players the right way.  Rochester looks great so far, and the Sabres have at least three prospects (Alex Nylander, Brendan Guhle, and Casey Mittlestadt) who all look like they will be studs.  Mittlestadt especially.

And the best part is, none of them are being rushed.

After scoring 0 goals against the pens then 6 against the flyers, clearly that means we should increase our goals scored by 6x every game, meaning we should be scoring 1.786899102460171e+62 goals by the end of the season or something like that.

lol, gotta love small sample size extrapolations. After two games, Ovi was on track for a 287 goal season.

Seventeenth.

In my opinion, Florida has played well in their first two games. I'm okay with that right now.

However, I am still somewhat surprised at the extension given to Matheson. Still a small sample size. I remember when Brandon Pirri had an absurdly high shooting percentage with the Cats, and there were individuals who were branding him the Next Gretzky™©, and were going to storm the Broward County Arena if the Panthers did not sign him to a ginormous lifetime contract for the 248 goals he was guaranteed to score per year.

A nice bridge contract, sure. But to commit $18+ million for 3 defensive players for the next 5 years seems unwise. Sure, the NTC does not kick in until later, but still. Matheson is a nice player at this time, but would it not have been better to see if he is a consistent player before giving im so much??

Kinda like Stephen Weiss - one year does not a top line player make. Detroit learned that lesson, but they were able to jettison that worthless POS.
