I always like to hate-watch the US men's team for some strange reason. Well, just meh-watch. But Pulisic deserves more than this. How embarrassing. I mean, c'mon.

The modern era of the USMNT in a sense began on November 19, 1989, with the final match of qualifying for the 1990 World Cup.  Beat Trinidad, in Trinidad, and the US would go to its first World Cup in 40 years.  Lose or draw, and Trinidad would go instead.   We won, 1-0.

This time around we only needed a draw, and couldn't even pull that off.  How far we've come.

Not only that but Mexico and Costa Rica also lost.  This is the only outcome that would eliminate the USA and it happened.

The problem was they did not even need the draw.  They needed El Tri and Los Ticos to win when they were already going.

I'm not Subby but I doubt it. Soccer fans will care about the Gold Cup. The audience that only tunes in for the World Cup because it's the Super Bowl of soccer, will not watch or care about the Gold Cup.

Worst I can recall: After reaching the knockout stages of both the 2012 Euros and 2014 World Cup, Greece started the qualifying campaign for the 2016 Euros with high hopes.  Their previous results put them in the pot of seeded teams, and the draw gave them a dream group of Northern Ireland, Hungary, Romania, Finland, and the mighty Faroe Islands (population under 50,000).

A year and a bit later, Greece clinched last place in this group with a game to spare after 3 draws and 6 losses, including losses both home and away to the Faroes.

As a Limey I have to say that's a real shame. I like the US at the WC, not least for the Fark threads. If I could I'd give you our place, we'll just waste it playing turgid football and go out in the group stage anyway.

It's always been an inbred organization dedicated to promoting various "chosen ones". The same happens in other National teams across the world but for the USMNT they combined it with nepotism and a style of play that is all about speed. As everyone says, they need a full reboot but most especially behind the scenes.

As did Chile and Scotland. All Scotland had to do was beat all-but-eliminated Slovenia, since Slovakia was nigh-guaranteed to win their match. Drew 2-2. Chile could afford to lose by a goal if Peru didn't lose and Argentina won, lost by 3 while Peru drew and Argentina won.

/sorry, sotua

Reading Marca now, and there's a slight chance of the Panama-Costa Rica match being replayed. This FIFA administration has already sent the South Africa-Senegal match into a replay due to a crooked referee that got banned for life. If the US federation and maybe even Honduras' (they get sent to the playoff by this result instead of qualifying outright) sue for a replay, they might just get it.

As a casual fan of soccer, what this tells me is that there are catastrophic issues with the actual management of the team and soccer development in the US in general.

Watching some of the qualifiers for the US Men, there was this sense of awful lethargy. There is a reason why we've missed 2 Olymipcs in recent go arounds as well.

I think the biggest problem is ultimately that people just don't give a fark, and I think having Soccer still be a 'rich boys' game at the youth level is part of that problem.

Until we get like other nations where you have that strong lower and lower-middle class fanbase for soccer in general, which then translates into people who feel for soccer at a gut level coaching, training, and most importantly playing, we're going to keep being a nation that puts forth groups of athletes wearing a uniform and not real soccer teams.

Wow. Chile's elimination is even more painful than I thought. They got a forfeit win (instead of a draw) against Bolivia due to Bolivia fielding an ineligible player after making a complaint to FIFA. So did Peru (who had lost against Bolivia), since that player played against them too. So Peru gained 3 points to Chile's 2 and ultimately kicked Chile out.

One could argue that the US Men's Soccer is the biggest "boy's club" in all of North American sports. Until that psychology is fundamentally destroyed, the USMNT will forever be a collection of ostensibly good athletes that don't know how to play the game under real pressure.

As I joked in other thread, let's get us a bipartisan pathway to soccer citizenship for the Dreamers right now. Boom, instant youth team.

Also, can we let Pulisic play for Germany to not ruin his national career. Sure, he's way past the rule but can we say anyone else on the team has actually played with him given their terribleness.

Specifically, it's not the rich boys that are the problem. It's the rich boys parents that control the local clubs and get their kids promoted over more talented kids and hungry kids. But that's gonna happen, always does. The more senior levels need to be able to look past the various wunderkind hype and find the real talent..
