I have three friends who still use it, so I keep it signed in on Pidgin. After it goes, I'll be down to TWO messengers I still use, Skype and Facebook, three IF you count IRC as a "messenger".

They lost a massive chunk of their userbase at the start of the year when they made an API change that disabled a ton of third-party clients and anyone using older versions of the AIM client.

I still have an account configured in Pidgin, which I exclusively use for IMing with my partner when we're on our PCs in separate rooms.

I guess I'll have to finally get around to throwing a Jabbr server or something up on my VPS.

I have this exact same setup. we'll have to figure out some alternative that also works on her phone.

I'm a bit saddened by this. So much of my formative chatting happened there.

Still 30 years is a long time. And now the time is done for America Online Instant Messanger.

I remember obsessively trying to figure out the best song lyrics to use as my away message. I keep hoping FB messenger will allow for away messages so I can relive my college days.

AIM was instrumental in helping me arrange the first BJ of my life, and it will always hold a special place in my heart for that.

AIM is a good generational divider, at least for Americans.

If you went through middle & high school using a corded phone or a BBS to chat with your friends, you're a Gen X'er. If you went through middle & high school using AIM to chat with your friends, you're a Millennial. If you went through high school with Facebook, you aren't a Millennial.

// Not scientifically valid.

The only good part of the AOL story is that it gives me hope I'll get to watch Facebook take the same, sad, ex movie star giving beejays in the park for crack money nosedive someday.

For me:

High school (1995-1999) - corded phones and pay phones
Undergraduate College (1999-2003) - AIM
Graduate school and after (post-2003) - cell phone and Facebook

Seriously, for that four-year window when I was in college, AIM was THE primary way I communicated with my friends.  It was before Facebook and before smartphones, and I didn't even get a cell phone until after I graduated.

They were a giant coaster manufacturer that sent out free samples almost weekly for several years in the late 90's.

Yeah, Slack is doing just fine.

I almost became Database Manager for it...back at its peak.

Ohhh...the stats they showed real-time on screen in the lobby.
Didn't get the gig...had the tech chops, not as much management as they wanted.

So I just became DB Mgr in charge of the Americas region for a global manufacturing firm.
(North, South and Central America)

Managed just fine. :)

Thank god I didn't get it...AOL collapsed some years later quick.
And they were a sweatshop...well paid, but still there's more to life than money.

Lemme guess, you were born in the tail end of the 70s or first few years of the 80s?

They already came up with one for us, the Oregon Trail generation:
