If Trump has proven anything, it is that the south is still REALLY farking pissed they lost that war and they sure as fark want another shot at it... or something.
I have to admit that I grossly underestimated the number of people that shared the same thoughts and ideals as a few of the ass backwards hillbilly redneck racist pieces of shiat I ended up in high school with after we moved away from the city.
I figured it was a really small subset of people with no influence, and maybe in Colorado they are, but their numbers are enough to get Trump elected (popular vote, blah blah I know).
Just kinda funny learning that the country which may have at one point been the greatest on the planet has turned into a festering shiathole in my lifetime.
The Clinton years weren't this bad right?

Moore's office is adorned with a portrait of Jefferson Davis and busts of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, though he's claimed that's because they're fellow West Point graduates and not because they led the Confederacy.

The Civil War wasn't just about slavery, it was also about white supremecy. And while the war ended the slavery issue,  the South continued to fight for white supremecy for another century with segregation and Jim Crow. Not just through the power of the state, but also with a terrorist campaign that killed thousands through lynchings, bombings, and rioting mobs. This was held so closely to the southern identity that the Federal government had to integrate schools literally at gunpoint.  When people like this guy praise their Southern heritage and talk of a more Christian state, they are calling for a return to white supremecy and an apartied state. This position appears to be the mainstream, majority viewpoint in Alabama.

How many more centuries will decent people have to tolerate "Southen Heritage" until this ideology finally whiters and dies?

We learned our lesson these past 150 years. If the south rises again, they can go on their merry way.

When the derp belt is gone once and for all, we'll all be better off.

I mean....not including the people shot in the back trying to escape, but you know...everyone else.

A Czech name, apparently.

More interesting is Peroutka's legal practice---his law firm specializes in "effectively and ethically collect[ing] delinquent consumer debt."

Plenty of links on their website to lectures aimed at debtors about getting one's finances in order. Few details on what "effective and ethical collection of delinquent consumer debt" actually involves, beyond hinting that Peroutka will happily track down and harass delinquent debtors at what I'm sure are competitive rates per hour.

Wasn't southern independence all about trying to escape the debt-slavery imposed on poor, persecuted Dixie by northern bankers?

In my mind, one of the things that defines being an "intellectual" is the ability to tentatively adopt the premises of people you disagree with. This can be done for a number of reasons: To understand a person's motivations, to predict their behavior, or to analyze their worldview for inconsistencies. I'm continually dismayed by people all over the political spectrum who simply declare that their opponents are simply attempting to be as evil as possible, without trying to understand what actually motivates them.

As a pure intellectual exercise, put yourself in the shoes of a Roy Moore supporter. First, imagine that everything that fundamentalist protestant Christianity teaches is true: God is up there. He loves you. He will also burn you in hell if you aren't a good Christian, just like he's going to burn all of the Muslims, atheists, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhists, and unrepentant Jews. The bible teaches that everyone knows, instinctively, that God exists and that Jesus is the only way to heaven - some merely deny it because their hearts are evil.

Having established that everyone who doesn't agree with your religious beliefs is bad, consider our society: Evolution is considered a fact by the scientific community. Crimes that you consider to be morally on-par with murder are openly committed, without repercussion: Abortion, homosexuality, heresy. Women no longer accept God's intended roles for the sexes. Premarital sex occurs without consequence. Teachers and professors regularly lead good Christian children to hell by asking loaded questions. When Christians do attempt to use schools and governments to reign in society's most damnable excesses, they are told to stop by the courts. Our government, which was founded by Christians for Christians, now is being used as a tool to ensure that you are unable to save people from being sent to hell. Evil is winning.

Now, consider Roy Moore. Unlike those namby-pamby politically correct Republicans that always seem to cave to the evil forces in government when their jobs are on the line, Roy realizes that we are involved in a war for people's souls. Roy knows that a heretic is worse than a murderer, and that a government that truly cared about right and wrong would punish people for making people question Christianity. Roy knows that a good Christian should be willing to die rather than admit that even one jot or tittle of his beliefs, and that taking away your guns is the first step to taking away your faith. Roy knows that we already have enough non-Christians in America - why should we be importing more? Roy knows that fixing people's physical needs should always be subservient to fixing their souls - and if people aren't desperate enough to turn to God, doesn't feeding them without converting them hurt them more?

With all of this in mind, it's not all that inconsistent that someone advocating separating from the United States would also advocate for a candidate in our current government. Wouldn't it make sense that you'd want to preserve a Christian way of life for yourself and your children by any means necessary? If Roy is able to effect real change in Washington that puts Jesus back in the center of our Government, great. But of that doesn't work, then shouldn't the remaining good Christians of this once-great nation salvage what they can and secede, so that at least your Children will grow up knowing nothing but the soul-cleansing Gospel of Jesus? It's not particularly contradictory. (The new nation doesn't have to hang on terribly long, anyway. Just until Jesus comes back. 20 years tops.)

Anyway, as a last part of this exercise, grab the pre-chilled bottle of vodka from your freezer. Pour yourself about three fingers in a rocks glass. Drink the whole thing in one gulp. Repeat. Now, walk over to your doorframe and hit your head against it a few times. Harder. Seriously, what the fark is wrong with you? You've been thinking like a farking crazy person.
