O.O

Holy fark....

Looking at the amount of lateral movement in the tail of the airplane, I'll be that was a wild ride for those passengers.

Eh, they are used to drifting cars hazardly on public roads.
But with a plane that big, it's probably a new world record for the browning of the pants

Pilot over corrected?

The A380 is a ridiculous airplane. IIRC Airbus has been losing money, or barely breaking even on the project?

I have a buddy that flies those things for Emirates.    He wasn't the pilot on this one though.

No, I don't have anything relevant to add.  Why do you ask?

According to German news sites and an expert from the airport, the 380 is capable to land with crosswinds reaching 45 knots and this was only 33 knots so it was way below the safety limit.
Can't be arsed to look up what knots to mph is

No, but was that slow motion? Gee things happen a lot faster in small aircraft. Note to self: Sit near wings.

Doubtful. Most likely 22 sustained gusting much more.

Not according to formal international FAI competition rules. Your aircraft must be able to roll off the landing deck on it's own wheels without being lifted or carried. Anything else is good.

/350 points!

It looked like pilot error to me that compounded it.  Look how long that rudder was to the port side before the pilot corrected it.  It seems like he/she reacted late.

2017-10-06 02:20:24 PM
It's not the wind, as much as the gusts. All said, not the greatest landing, but as the saying goes; "any landing you can walk away from is a good landing".

1.15 x kts = mph so less than 40kts

Crosswinds can do a lot to smaller planes, me landing in a 22kt direct crosswind puts me in the "experimental" range because it's only certified up to 15kts.

To be fair, half the population couldn't find it with both hands, a map, and a flashlight.

Normally I come into these crosswind landing threads to crap all over the hysteria, pointing out that it's all controlled, looks more dramatic from outside the plane than inside, etc. etc.

This video is of a landing that was ALMOST a giant cock-up.  The pilot timed is crab wrong, and then the big rudder movements led to the oscillations on the runway. That might have ended poorly.

FYI crosswind landing limits on an A380 are something like 40kts.  This shouldn't have been as dramatic as it was.  Basically a bad landing captured on video.

You know, I didn't really see any 'skidding'... .the tires looked like they grabbed really well and the plane  swerved back and forth after touchdown.  Was probably quite a fun ride for those inside!

/They get bonus points for using SCAREBUS in their headline, tho...

Agreed, or got hit with a quick wind direction shift. Looked like a normal crosswind landing until the plane was on the ground, then there was a bit of excitement.

The little bus I am pretty sure cannot be cross controlled. So you have to land in a crab kinda looked like he was trying to straighten it out before touching down.
