(Popular Science)   We all knew Big Brother would eventually be watching us all. But did it really have to be Mark Zuckerberg? Seriously, couldn't it have been someone cooler, like Dwayne Johnson?   ( popsci.com) divider line

Dwayne Johnson is busy looking out for Emma Watson.

Interestingly, in one of my classes we asked a bunch of first year college students where they went for news and information

A couple of web sites, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, etc.  When I asked about Facebook they just sort of shrugged- it really wasn't a big thing with them.  It's for old people now- the place where you put up a picture so your grandma can see it.

Whatever happened to the novel idea of, oh I don't know, not using Facebook?!?!?
"But everyone else -"
Exactly. Bunch of f'ing lemmings.
Then they have the nerve to be surprised when someone knows everything about them.

He knows nothing about me because I don't have an account. Neither does my husband. The one person I know who has an account already knows never to post pictures of us on her account.

I deleted my account years ago and don't miss it one bit. It was a bit odd at first as checking it daily had become a habit but you grow out of it quick. With that said, someone has your data if you own a smartphone. Regardless if it Google, Apple, MS, or Amazon, there is someone out there that has quite a bit of personal information on you.

That is a hard game to play, and I know there are ways to turn on Google/Apple services to do less tracking but it would be hard to live without a smartphone these days (for me). I wish that wasn't the case but it is.

I deactivated my account right before this past shooting.  It was just old people arguing and people posting their church picks.

It's amazing how addicting it can still be. I'll still catch myself typing in the web address and getting to the login screen before I realize what I've done. See that I have to put in my password and kill the tab.

I'm sure it's designed to be that way.

Big Brother's snooping was part of an oppressive, totalitarian government. People willingly log into Facebook and give their privacy away.

I log into FB daily. I have almost 1,000 friends.

I don't get my news from there. I don't use it for information. I use it to build and maintain relationships with family and friends.

I think I'm a pretty normal user.

I've seen really troubling evidence that FB can influence elections in dictatorships like the Philippines and Malaysia and that is disturbing, but I haven't seen any evidence that it is a good vehicle for swaying elections in democratic states like ours where we have a free press or in Germany where there are stricter laws about what can enter the public sphere but where the right is on the ascendency. I am perfectly open to any evidence to the contrary, but I just haven't been presented with any yet.

I'm not defending FB or Zuckerberg, I'm simply asking for real data before I get all het up.

Deactivated my facebag account a few weeks ago.
It's been so nice not using that site.

"Big brother" is an amalgamation.  I somehow identify with it in the sense that I myself am am amalgamation because of fractured personality structure possibly from trauma. The amalgamation aspect has and will continue it's growth and eventual omnipresence. Coupled with misinfo/disinfo, you can consider the humming of your friendly neighborhood DSLAM the sound of inevitability.

I've avoided facebook due to the privacy concerns, but have recently considered biting the bullet and joining. I'm an oldish (55 year old) widower with very few friends, and it seems facebook might be the only way to find friends from long ago.

Anyone have any constructive suggestions or comments?

My brother hooked up with an old high school buddy via Facebook, so I guess it's not pure evil?

Have you SEEN those people?  Do you REALLY want to associate with that?
