I was pretty ignorant of what it actually meant.

You had that in common with the people who fly it today.

Bs when Petty was growing up the flag was pretty much a standard in southern culture and our schools taught the lost cause associated with it. that is not "rebel without a clue" that is rebel who was lied to by the state and even the country

In the linked Rolling Stone article Tom Petty references his "Southern Accents" tour. It was the first concert I went to after graduating from high school. I can still remember the drive down. I can still see Aimee Mann wearing a black tank-top singing for 'Til Tuesday in the opening act. There were two "old guys" that offered us a joint and I'm probably 15 years older now then they were then. I guess that makes me really old.

The stage for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was evocative of a burned out southern plantation. There were huge white columns with tattered sheer white drapes that blew around. In the back a big confederate flag. I remember the lights going red and playing across the diaphonous cloth and it looking like fire. Then thinking of Sherman's March and I said so to my friend. We laughed.

Damn universe, taking the good ones too soon.

It's a shame that the PUTP video will likely never see a DVD release because of the Confederate flag backdrop during "Rebels". That's a damn fine concert video.

Now, now.  You're not allowed to call out defenders of Confederate History and White Nationalism on Fark anymore.  It's mean.  Stop it.

Petty is gone way too early and yet kid rock and Ted Nugent live. More proof if there is a God, he hates us.

He doesn't hate us, He is just assembling the greatest band of all time to greet us when we get there.

I feel sorry for Heart, since Ann is going to hell for gluttony.

He sounds a bit like me. Grew up here in Ga. Surrounded by Civil War memorabilia. My Dad's house is less than a mile from the Chickamauga Chattanooga National park. You can't throw a rock around here without hitting a memorial or battlefield.
