The cops or security guard didn't hear his suicide shot? I am assuming it would have been the only single shot sound.

But so far the FBI has not identified a clear motive, said two FBI officials. And they do not believe Paddock's mental health had deteriorated to a point that would have triggered him to commit such an act.

WUT?

I'm no psychiatrist, but isn't a deteriorated mental state pretty much a requirement for going bananas and shooting a couple hundred people?

I'm sure they did.  But until you breach the door and put eyes on the corpse you don't know it was the suicide shot.

Deaf guards are more brave.  They can't tell when the shooting stops.

It's possible he sprayed a final blast at the door as a final fark you and then did it, for example.

Or, frankly, while guns are loud, if the guard is down the hall with several intervening walls between the gun and the guard, yeah, he might not have heard it or might not recall it.

Also, a couple hundred rounds were apparently fired in the general direction of the guard.  He might actually have some ringing in his ears along with the leg wound.

Plus he had just gotten shot. Details get fuzzy in a fight. They also had the risk that he was swapping over to a more accurate weapon to hit people behind cover, a solo shot isn't unheard of.

There was no suicide shot - he'd been dead for hours & the real shooter escaped by deploying a balloon attached to a cable that was hooked by a low flying plane. I saw it in a documentary once about a wealthy businessman and his struggles after the death of his parents. Totes legit

fusillade762: He could have just been a raging asshole.

He was definitely a raging asshole.  There are tons of crazy people, and usually that crazy manifests as paranoia, fear of going outside, fear of dark-skinned people, muslims, etc, but it takes someone who's truly an incorrigible asshole at heart to turn that into shooting up a crowd.  Only assholes shiat on everyone else because of their insecurities.

Well, then you'd have to justify a mental health solution.  It's much easier to vilify a person than suggest they may have had a disease.

It sounds like he was either in a shiat ton of pain, which seems unlikely as he gambled for 8 how a day and planned like a motherfarker, or grew had some hella obtrusive thoughts.

I'm going for the latter.

I used to work in the gaming industry.  A casino is a lonely place once you get to know it.  Sounds like he knew them all.  This was not a man who took the time to see the joyful things in life.

I still don't have any read on what this guy's angle was, other than contempt for happy people.  He does not seem to be motivated by any sort of political ideology that I can think of, unless he was just another start a race war type that was only in it for the lulz.

Shove a gun into a pillow (or your mouth) and it won't sound like much. There've been plenty of "sieges" where the cops were staking out a corpse because they couldn't hear some guy shoot himself.

Okay, kinda personal, not so csb time... I often have very vivid dreams. There's always a beginning, middle and end. The kind where you wake up with your heart pounding and your brain throbbing. I occasionally talk in my sleep and sometimes cry in my sleep and wake up screaming. Most people when you talk about this kind of thing will say "oh, everyone has these kind of problems." But, really? Is this a sign of having issues that need to be discussed with a professional ? Otherwise, I live a good, happy life.

The guy opened up on the security guard with, what police said, was about 200 rounds through the door of the hotel room, hitting him in the leg.  In high stress situations, like being shot at 200 times, you tend to lose senses like hearing.  Auditory exclusion is a real thing and affects people in combat, police action shootings, and what not.  If he did indeed off himself after shooting the security guard, it's reasonable to think the security guard's body was under so much intense stress in that moment that he couldn't hear anything, let alone a single gunshot.

Hang on there, shooter. I never said he silenced it. I said it sticking it into his mouth means a lot of that expanding gas goes into his mouth and throat, not into the open air. It really won't sound the same. It's the same way you can tell if the source of a sound comes from this room or the next: the sound is muffled and changed in timbre.

Was waiting for this after my post, correct, you didn't say silenced*. I mean to say that putting a pillow over the muzzle of a revolver does zero farks to silence a gunshot from a revolver. farking science.

Isn't sociopathy a mental illness?  That's what I don't get.  They're trying to determine if mental illness played a part; the dude shot a few hundred people.  Is that not mental illness in and of itself?

Is it because he killed himself, and didn't leave behind some other bogeymen to rage at: no Muslims, no IRA, no La Raza or New Black Panthers, no right wing, no left wing?

It was just a guy and his many guns and stockpiles of ammo. Is that the problem? That's all we're left with? Our national obsession?
