Isn't this where the term couch-audition comes from?  I thought this was pretty standard in the film industry.

As liberal as Hollywood supposedly is I would have thought that the casting couch was a relic of the past.  Evidently to some women's issues are great for selling movie tickets but not to be actually practiced.

I think that the desire to be famous overrides people's self respect most times.  I mean... if she really wants the role....

Or the fear of their careers and livelihoods being destroyed by a powerful vindictive rapist.

Yea I said it, rapist.  If it went as far as the stories in TFA I'm sure it went further.

Oh for sure!  I'll condone your use of rapist.  I just wasn't really "shocked" but this article.

Has your daughter ever expressed any interest in acting?  If she came home crying because a creepy old guy made her give him a "massage" you might care.  All those women he harassed are someone's daughters.

Heh. Me too.

I'm not totally sure who this is. Heard the name, know he's associated with movies, don't really care beyond that.

Not quite my point, but I get what you're saying.

I had to google him.  I assumed he was associated with movies/television based off the headline.

Seriously, though, the creepiest part about this whole deal is that it sounds like Weinstein's done this so often that his company has a standard settlement amount & contract, and that even discussing the criminal aspect of what he's done is somehow banned.

No contract should prevent you from blowing the whistle on criminal activity. Unwanted sexual contact is a criminal act. Why is this asshole not in jail?

And, yeah, it's a rhetorical question with an obvious answer - "because he's rich" - but I had to ask it anyway. It's becoming more and more clear that, in America, that justice isn't blind - it's gated, and there's a VIP room.

He produces, hence nobody remembers the name.  I am sure you have seen this logo though -

He is one of the more powerful people in Hollywood.

"Thanks for showing me how Hollywood works," as a response to ostensibly winning a hush settlement seems like an odd thing to do. Either it's really sarcastic or she's lording her victory over him. In either case, some of the things described in the article seem like the actions of a caricature of an eccentric Hollywood exec. He said, she said, they got their settlements, and others likely will too. Shame it has to be at the expense of someone's dignity.

So he claims that he learned all his business tricks in the 60's and 70's when the rules were different.  Has he been living under a rock since then though?  Because sexual harassment training has been around for at least the last 20 years.

As Terry Pratchett said (or had one of his characters say), 'privilege' literally means 'private law'.

The allegations are vague enough that I'm not sure if they're criminal.  Creepy, inappropriate, and grounds for civil action in sexual harassment suits to be sure, but unless he was actually forcing himself on women or non-consensually grabbing them as opposed to just badgering and implying tit for tat arrangements it probably stays in the civil realm.

That being said, I'm not sure if non-disclosure agreements can be enforced when there's a documented pattern of workplace sexual harassment.

You're not the only one. I always assumed Weinstein was gay until I realized he wasn't Fierstein. Which happened literally 30 seconds before I saw your post.
