I just re-read this book recently so I'm getting a kick...

Given the current state of our democracy maybe Mr. (Lt. Col. -ret) DuBois had some solid points.

As a huge fan of the book, the movie pissed me off something fierce, and I could never appreciate it for what it was.I think it would have been much better had they just changed the character and location names and called it something else.

As someone who came to the book after the movie, I love both.

The movie is better than the book.

The book is not a smart as it thinks it is.

And it is certainly not as smart as its legions of fanboys claim it is.

The movie at least acknowledges this and makes it a joke.

There were certain things I liked about the movie, but on the whole it wasn't that great.

It's a Bacta tank.  Duh.

Satire doesn't have to get all the incidental details right.

Hey, that's all good. I'm not trying to demean the movie, I'm just saying that it doesn't tell the same story as the book, and might have benefited from not trying to shoehorn the book's characters into the story it wanted to tell.

I realize the movie acknowledges the joke. That doesn't, on its own, make the joke funny. It's good in places, but overall, it's a poor movie. The leads are terrible and it's really unclear where Verhoeven spent all his money, because much of it is missing from what's onscreen.

RoboCop makes a lot of the same jokes, and is the much better movie.

The problem I have with Starship Troopers as satire is this.

The Arachnids...are DICKS.  They've had seven movies and an animated TV series to subvert this somehow.  They've chosen not to.  Those goddamn things are dicks, through and through, who'll gleefully eviscerate you if you glance in their general direction.

It's amazing how people at the time didn't realize it was satire. The 4th sequel, Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars is out now with the voices of some the original cast.

I like both the book and movie. What I hate is people turning every story into a social economical political commentary and judgement of our current blah blah blah shut the fark up and enjoy the giant bugs getting shot. Not everything needs to have some deep inner meaning.

I hear ya.  Didn't mean to come off as defensive.  I was just sharing my experience with the media, riffing off of you doing the same.  I'm not even sure I disagree that the movie didn't need to be "Starship Troopers".  I'll have to think on that one.  Heck, it could have been a warhammer 40k movie and had exactly the same plot and tone.  Call it "Imperial Guard".

the did not seem to care about Race, or Gender, or ability.
It was more what can you do. and what are you willing to risk. so much closer to a meritocracy.
