They're just trying to flush out the local Sasquatch population; those hairy bastards have been hunting tourists in that area for years.  There's even a plaque at the top of Mt. Washington memorializing all the people that they've killed...I assume that's what it's for anyway.

Every time that book is even vaguely alluded to, I am compelled to comment on how badly (and for reasons I can't really explain, because it's not wise for me to read it too often) it affected me- to the point where pretty much everyone I spent any significant amount of time with asked me to stop reading it.
