rubi_con_man: So basically, this show is about a park for people who want to kill or screw other humans with impunity, right?

That's most of us.

Dingleberry Dickwad: Eh, I thought it was more of how it reveals that some people were sociopaths to begin with and the park just helped bring out their true self.

Only if you (and the crowd) take the position that the robots are sentient, and not just really fancy toasters.

Because you end up with a version of the elevator wielding Mjolnir argument.

Can you be sociopathic towards an automaton? Are you raping your dildo?

Ronin Around: kbronsito: Ok but if they don't cast as many actors as they can from the HBO series Rome in this, it's gonna count as a FAIL. Even if it's just some cameos they really have to do it.

At the very least they need Kevin McKidd & Ray Stevenson to do a walk-thru farking up some stuff

Keep dreaming. I'm still waiting for the Ray Stevenson cameo on Grey's Anatomy.

That's a bit of an obtuse argument. While yes, they are machines, they do have a form of sentience. It may be forcibly limited so that full on self awareness isn't supposed to be possible, but it's still sentience. They were also designed for the express purpose of being as human like as possible. It can be argued that even though they are machines underneath, they do have emotions and feel pain, and that willingly abusing and causing pain, even if it's to a machine, is sociopath/psychopath like behavior.

But isn't that only if you perceive them as human? If you can maintain the concept that they are only devices, is it any different from tormenting Siri?

But at the same time none of the park goers know of the sentience. That think they are dealing with computer programs in fake human skin.

Which would actually be a great way to let the violent people vent themselves rather than doing it in regular society.

In theory the park is about more than that. People make references to other scenarios they went through. But that would be boring for a TV show.

Hopefully they can do something different.  The whole series seemed to be exploring the whole "what is self' thing until the end when it just became another robot rebellion trope.  In other words, the last episode just ruined it for me.

I don't see how they are going to get pass the mass slaughter of humans by robots in the end of the first season, with other killer robots running around loose behind the scenes.

Unless they replace everyone that was killed with a host to try and cover it up...

and I just gave away the plotline to the next season.

Well they deserve it, and the effects are awesome.  It's obvious that many people were impressed with the opening visuals since Star Trek Discovery decided to copy the feel of it.

tkgeisha: I struggled with this show. Maybe more from the tone of it overall. I guess I was disappointed it didn't show the park as a fun place kinda like the original movie before it got into the robots rebelling and becoming sentient and all moody. Didn't Futureworld show a Roman and Midieval world also?

I tried watching the original Westworld movie just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I didn't make it very far before I fell asleep. But there was definitely a scene in the very beginning of the movie where Medievalworld and Romanworld were mentioned.

Oh, o.k. Thanks. There was a sequel that I vaguely remember called Futureworld, I thought that was the one that had it in it. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I would argue that since they are designed to emulate emotions and pain in a realistic way, someone deriving pleasure from the anguished fear in the face of one of the robots would indeed be a sociopath.

Playing through the newest itineration of Hitman, once a mission goes sideways I've gone on a mass murder spree, killing all the NPCs in the level out of frustration. Unlike previous versions, some of the newer NPCs actually drop to the ground and beg you not to kill them, sobbing, crying, etc.

It's only PC graphics on a 22" screen, and I'm never of the mindset that they're real people, but it's still disturbing as hell and I haven't done it since. I really can't imagine doing the same thing with Westworld-style physical realism. It would be monstrous.
