They figured out jump scares are all it takes to be considered scary and stopped there.

Though, there are still good horror movies. It's just that they're on Netflix...

As we speak, a controversial remake/reboot of Hellraiser - subtitled 'Judgement' - is apparently on its way

That's awesome.

Crucially, it is proceeding without the involvement of Barker or Bradley.

That sucks. Barker didn't make the movie he wanted to because of budget reasons

Hellraiser was awesome. Pinhead (his name's Spencer) wasn't a dumbasss wisecracking slasher. He wasn't even evil really. He dragged people into Hell to be tortured and made them enjoy it. The first two were classic. The third one was half-good. Dax from DS9 and Paula Marshall were very hot. The fourth one was sort of a mess but there were a lot of deleted scened that would have made it pretty good. The rest weren't even Hellraiser movies but separate stories with "Pinhead" bookending them like Rod Sterling in the Twilight Zone.

Of all the unnecessary remakes, Hellraiser deserves a good one.

It's hard to judge horror movies, IMO.  Some people love to be scared by the overly visual, jump-out-at-you movies.  And yes, some of those are good but they end up being over-used.  I think you can't go wrong with a psychological horror movie.  I'm not talking about ones where "oh no, there are people being tortured and killed all around and the protagonist is next!"  I mean those movies where you are forced to think about the situation without visual aids.  They may have "visual" scenes eventually but the most horrifying parts are totally situational.

I totally agree.
And related to that, there's a reason why the first Saw movie was the only really good one imho.

I love the dinner scene in Hellraiser. Everyone is laughing at nothing. The daughter's boyfriend fills her glass from across the table, but in the next frame he's sitting in a different seat. It's awesome.

I was 15 when Hellraiser was released. I still love that movie. First three were fun. I did binge watch all the other sequels not too long ago but wish I hadn't. Only made it through a few minutes of whichever abomination was last that didn't have Bradley as Pinhead.

I believe that was the one written a week before shooting began because the rights were about to expire and they hadn't noticed.

Loved Hellraiser...I never thought of the Cenobites as evil.  They were giving people exactly what they want.

A more bloody version of Something Wicked This Way Comes...

The fourth one could have been good. There was a whole subplot with the Cenobite Angelique in the 1600s when cenobites were fun loving clowns. They still dragged people to Hell but they had a sense of humor about it. Then Pinhead got a hold of her and turned her into a leather clad sado-masocistic cenobite. It wasn't a bad story but they managed to fark it up somehow.

That's always my concern.  That's a movie that works at least 50% because of brilliant (or lucky) casting.  It would be difficult to trip and fall into the same pile of luck twice.

WhiskeyBender: The Void is one of my new faves. I watched it twice before Netflix carried it.

The Void was good, but I felt the ending was a dont-know-what-to-do-now ending.  But a fairly solid effort for the budget.  Plus Knives Chau!

If you haven't, you should download and play "TRIHAYWBFRFYH."  It's free, but don't learn anything about it beforehand if you do.

You might want o give this a go as well:

There are a number of cool comic stories about the Cenobites that expands upon them. They're all pretty decent and I recommend anyone to read it that care about Hellraiser. They've got some really cool, twisted artwork.

Damn, I should check that out. I love Hellraiser. I even don't hate the sequels after the fourth one, even though they're all the same story. Some guy doesn't know he's dead and in Hell and keeps living the thing that put him there. The last one however, was an abomination.

Hellraiser's weakness isn't in the effects or the acting, it it's in the writing. It didn't have any flaws more money would have solved.

I absolutely love Hellraiser, although the Mrs won't watch anything remotely "scary" anymore since I tricked her into watching Marathon Man.

I completely forgot that Clive Barker did Candyman - and now I have that piano tune in my head and getting creeped out.  Lovely.

If I were in the office I could get you the name of it, sorry. It's a collection of disparate stories, connected by people who have found the device. I forget the names of a lot of the things, its been a while. One of the stories a woman and her kid get stuck in the Cenobite...ummm...world? Hell?

It's from the old Epic / Marvel comics.  There are collected editions but here's the original rundown:

There are a lot of horror movies that weren't so scary in the theater, but later... walking alone in a dark place, a gnawing terror begins to grow in you with a dash of unease...

I tried to rewatch Hellraiser not too long ago.  It was really very boring, I guess when I was 12, I could be captivated in hopes of seeing a boob or Pinhead, which there isn't a lot of either in that movie.

I watched it last year and enjoyed it.

Eden Lake was very good...
The Evil Dead remake wasn't too bad...
The new IT was ok...better than the original, I'd say...only cuz the original had SO MANY face actors, it was hard to keep them in their perspective roles without thinking of Night Court, One Day at a Time, WKRP, etc.
Pennywise was better in the original, I'll stick with that opinion...
Frontiers...
Martyrs...
Hell, even the Hills Have Eyes remake was pretty good.
Devil's Rejects...
There really isn't a shortage of good horror out these days...there's plenty to choose from...
Every now and again you run into something pretty special like Babadook...
You just gotta look around, check out what other countries have to offer.
Like Chemical Peel...that was a nice surprise.

I'm a big fan of Hellraiser, and I have seen all the sequels.  Yes, they are not as good as the original but still fun to watch.

I would love to see an updated version of the original with top-notch CGI and digital cameras.
