Agreed. Dark Star, too. Both examples of a relatively decent movie made on a shoestring budget as well.

And if we don't care about the movie actually taking place *in* space I would add Slither, The World's End and Attack the Block.

Word.  Dark Star is priceless and still hits the right notes.  Though one should get hold of the novelization by Alan Dean Foster - one of my desert island books and well worth the effort to find it.

We just started watching The Orville this week, and we love it - it's twisted Trek done by people who know what they're doing and love what they're working on.

FTA: "eventually came up with the final script a mind-boggling 12 drafts later. "

That's not mind-boggling, it's kind of par for the course.

Mind you, there's usually a big re-think about direction and message 'round about draft 8 or 9.

I still think that in a SDCC in the not to distant future we'll see Mel Brooks complaining about how Rick isn't interested and generally being an old dick, then Rick appears on the screen above, yell at the camera, and storms onto the stage.

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a fantastic TV series. I wish they had made more with the plot lines from the next two novels. I still wish they would. In exactly the same style. Bad retro-futuristic 80s with bad 80s BBC production values. They're my two favourite things in TV.

stevetherobot: Spaceballs wasn't that good. Yeah, I went there.

I saw Spaceballs in the theater when it first came out....and I agree with you. Yes, it has a few chuckles here and there, but overall, it's a bad movie.

I think it's one of those movies that people look more fondly on in hindsight because of how generally awful comedies are today, rather than on it's own merits. Or just that Hollywood doesn't even BOTHER to make comedy movies anymore.

In the year that Spaceballs came out, you had comedies and various comedy/action or comedy/drama movies:
Three Men and Baby, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Stakeout, Witches of Eastwick, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Princess Bride, Raising Arizona., Roxanne. Those are relatively strong movies. Maybe not classics that demand viewing nowadays ( Stakeout is clearly the weakest of those ). Maybe Lethal Weapon falls into that group? Maybe even Innerspace?

And there's a couple more serious comedies, like Good Morning Vietnam and Broadcast News.

There's a bunch of broader throwaway comedies, Throw Mamma From the Train, Summer School, Can't Buy Me Love, Revenge of the Nerds 2, Police Academy 4, Overboard, Ernest Goes to Camp.

This year, how many comedies came out ( if you don't included animated stuff ) to wide distribution? Girls Trip. Baywatch. CHiPS. Snatched. Maybe Guardians of the Galaxy 2 counts? The Big Sick(?), Home Again?

I have it on DVD.  I got it so I could use clips from it in my video for 'Science Fiction / Double Feature'.

It's still quite enjoyable, but I think how well it holds up depends largely on how well you like those old '30s and '40s serials.  It also didn't hurt that they were able to get some actual talent for things like makeup and effects.  The production values were much better than they might have been.

Certainly in the top ten best *stories* for soft core porn...

Spaceballs was good - from anyone else but Mel Brooks.  For him, it was near the bottom of his output.  That's still pretty good by an objective measure, but I had come to expect more from Mel.

Heck, I liked 'The Twelve Chairs' better than Spaceballs, and 'Chairs' wasn't even a Mel Brooks story.  He made that one off of someone else's story / script.

You could do an on-line search through IMDB, or you could sift through the reference book 'Creature Features', by John Stanley.  Either way is likely to be a lot of work.

I got a copy of Creature Features for my birthday.  It lists damn near everything, with capsule reviews and a five star rating system (with half-stars possible).  There are close to 6,000 films covered in that book.

I'm (slowly) working on making a spreadsheet listing the title and date of every film in the book with 3 or more stars, so I have something a bit more searchable.  Also includes which page the film is on, so I can refer back to the full data.  Setting my filter at 3 stars keeps it down to a reasonable size.

Other seriousness:

How close do you suppose we are to being able to add CGI visuals to the original radio series? (Which actually now includes all five novels of the trilogy. Don't like it? Don't look at the screen, and it'll be just like radio.)

The same could be said for new CGI visuals on top of the soundtracks for the animated Star Trek. (Don't like it? You'll still have Filmation's animation to love.)

"Jews in Space", that would be Star Trek.

Galaxy Quest wins. It has the advantage of being a comedy and not having to make any sense. A society builds a working starship by watching a TV show? But it doesn't matter, it was a very funny movie, especially because of Alan Rickman.

Orville's a better Star Trek show than Star Trek's been in a long time. And there's really not that much comedy in it. It's not satirical  it's fairly straight. There were much goofier episodes of all of the Treks.
