I am going to go out on a limb here. I speculate that he died because his heart stopped operating.

An old guy with 50 years of heavy smoking incurs heart problems?

Impossible

There must be foul play.

Cardiac arrest has zero to do with a patients health.  It can happen to anybody from the worlds worst couch potato to the worlds fittest athlete.  It's an electrical malfunction.  The body's version of the blue screen of death.

As I said before, I suspect that one of his friends stood him up once he reached the gates of Hell.

On the other hand, maybe we will we learn that he was secretly broke and that he did not want to have to live like a refugee. Having a breakdown when free fallin' in that way can be difficult, and you don't know how it feels until it happens to you. You feel as though you have no navigator to guide your way home.

Regardless, the matter is academic as he will not be comin' round here no more.

/Maybe I had too much to drink.

that's simply not true.:

"..Because sudden cardiac arrest is so often linked with coronary artery disease, the same factors that put you at risk of coronary artery disease may also put you at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. These include: •A family history of coronary artery disease •Smoking •High blood pressure •High blood cholesterol •Obesity •Diabetes •A sedentary lifestyle •Drinking too much alcohol (more than two drinks a day) Other factors that may increase your risk of sudden cardiac arrest include: •A previous episode of cardiac arrest or a family history of cardiac arrest •A previous heart attack •A personal or family history of other forms of heart disease, such as heart rhythm disorders, congenital heart defects, heart failure and cardiomyopathy •Age - the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest increases with age •Being male - men are two to three times more likely to experience sudden cardiac arrest •Using illegal drugs, such as cocaine or amphetamines •Nutritional imbalance, such as low potassium or magnesium levels "

Wrong guy. You're thinking of Ryan Adams, whose debut album was Heartbreaker, and from which Tom Petty got the name for his band, The Heartbreakers.

Hmmm, TFA says they examine anyone who hasn't seen a doctor in six months, but the article from yesterday (his final interview) says he saw his doctor in August.

FTFA:
The autopsy was conducted Tuesday, Los Angeles County coroner spokesman Ed Winter told the Associated Press. While no foul play is suspected, Winter says the coroner investigates all deaths where the deceased hadn't seen a doctor in six months.

From the previous article:
Besides, Petty already seemed to have weathered his allotted bout of infirmity during August when he came down with laryngitis and had to postpone a few shows.
Did the incident spook him?
"Yeah, because I don't think I've missed a show in many, many years," he said. "It freaked me out so bad, because it came out of nowhere. ... My doctor said 'I don't think you've been sick - I'm looking in my records - in over 17 years, since I've seen you sick with anything. And I'm always like, 'I don't get sick.' But, [stuff] happens.

WTF?  That shiat don't add up.
