When there's a tragedy of this magnitude, the natural reaction is to rush to a loved one and comfort them.

*cradles gun in arms*

Everytime there is a mass shooting, people run out and buy guns because they fear the feds are going to come and confiscate everyone's gun.

Has that actually ever happened? I mean, after a mass shooting. Or more widely, has the government ever done a mass confiscation of firearms?  Other than during JADE HELM, that is.

Yes during the bowling green massacre. Since the citizens didn't have weapons it was far worse the. It should have been. Never forget.

As a follow up to my previous comment I hope that if congress actually outlaws bump fire (and similar devices) that it is retroactive and not some "legal if bought before X date" bullshiat. Or allow loopholes like buying them "used" from a law enforcement trade ins like you could with hi-cap mags back in the day.

At a minimum make them NFA items like real machine guns and suppressors.

Making them NFA items (and not closing out any registry of them) would be a way of properly restricting and controlling them without giving substantial ammunition to the "they're going to confiscate your guns and accessories" crowd. The NFA shows that the federal government can regulate firearms -- and in so doing reduce the frequency of their criminal misuse -- without outright prohibiting them to civilians.

Of course, that is a middle ground solution, so it will satisfy neither "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" extremists nor "Why does anyone need an assault rifle?" gun grabbers.

This is some weird dichotomy. Whenever there's a mass shooting, the NRA and consipiracy nutters like Alex Jones claim that either the incident will result in a massive gun-grab* by the government or that it was some sort of "false flag" operation by the government to justify the aforementioned gun grab.  But what usually happens is that there is a spike in the purchase of firearms and associated products by people who are afraid they won't be able to obtain firearms anymore because they actually believe the bullshiat peddled by the NRA et al.

It's like when Obama was elected. The NRA freaked out and claimed that his administration would enact sweeping gun control legislation, which never happened. However, whenever a  GOP candidate has been elected, such as GWB and Trump, gun sales plummeted, as did membership in the NRA.

I think that the NRA and douchebags like Alex Jones actually experience mind-blowing orgasms whenever there's a mass shooting or a Democrat gets elected, because they know both are good for business. It's a shame that your average ammosexual doesn't realize that the NRA and other gun-rights** organizations are taking advantage of their fear and actually benefit from mass shootings and the election of a Democrat to the office of the Presidency and/or the DNC winning a majority in Congress.  Kind of makes those who accuse liberals of being mindless "sheeple" look stupid, IMHO. Talk about irony.

Obama did try to ban assault weapons after the newton shooting. He nearly succeeded except for the house of Representatives. Clinton did ban new assault weapon purchases for 10 years which Bush let expire. California passed legislation to ban purchasing semiautomatic rifled with detachable magazines in 2013, but the governor vetoed it.

There's a big difference between sensible gun control measures promoted by Obama and Clinton (successfully or not) and the wholesale gun-grabbing that was hysterically suggested as inevitable by the NRA, Alex Jones and others. I should have been more clear when I brought the subject up.

I have two "nutty theories" of my own, but they kind of tie together. One is, this slaughter was part of some darkweb version of "Rat Race" , and no he didn't get all his supplies alone. Two is that the original target was maybe what the gamblers had intended on, but he farked them over as well. Hence, the no manifesto..that in itself being his 'fark you' to the ones behind the scenes, since they don't get their propaganda mileage out of it, whatever slant they were going to put on it.

He was egged on, of that I have no doubt, and also highly doubt he had no online presence, and if there isn't one showing up, he was using alts.

All of that makes more sense to me than anything the right wing nuts can dream up.

The reality of confiscation in a democracy is that bans are mostly voluntary.
If a handful of people come out shooting then you'll run out of cops long before you achieved the goal. Even if you succeeded, the political factions that drove it would be slaughtered in the next poll. Going after the voting public with brute force is a very unpopular and impractical way to govern.
So the only "easy" route is grandfathering. It makes the existing stock more valuable while restricting ownership rights on all newcomers, and this lowers resistance by not affecting any current owner.

Since that's the likely choice of action then the most profitable response is to stock up now. You can register your stock on whatever tracking scheme is devised and sell the overpriced components later for a large profit.
Because there are millions of gun owners across every district of America, a small subset of collectors can dry up stock of any gun related item in an instant.

/since people know bans won't prevent terrorism, these can still fail and cost their backers support.
/but the implications of the attempt can last, making the item in question a relatively safe investment.
/happened  with the awb. It failed to prevent shootings, and cost democrats elections, but made collectors wealthy.
