(Deadspin)   Before there was The Rock, there was Bruno Sammartino, and before there was Jim Ross, there was Lance Russell. A great announcer in his own right. RIP, Lance. You were great. Made the work exciting   ( deadspin.com) divider line

The Rock is from 1996.  Never saw the others.  Available on Netflix?

thx. I was pissed when I saw Man on the Moon and saw they gave his part to Jim Ross. No offense, but you learned it from him, dude.

Just give me back the board, Lance. It was a good board and I like it. You know how hard it is to find a board you like.

Memphis wrestling was great.  Loved watching it every Saturday morning.  Loved watching him interview macho man, Jimmy Hart, and many others.

Being from Canada my old school was Ed Whalen.  Oddly enough I just learned he played a fairly big role in Ron Maclean's early career.

Since i am "only" 47 and grew up in the Chicago 'burbs, did not hear too much Lance Russell except on really late night syndication, so did not grow up with him-BUT he had one of the most distinctive voices, and always thought him, Bobby Heenan & Saul Creetchman were the top funniest wrestling personalities of the day. Lance was not bust out laughter like the other two, a more dry style, still funny as hell. Kevin Sullivan in his Florida Wrestling days was awesome too...Anyway, sorry to hear about his passing, rest in peace, never heard of anyone saying nothing but good things about him.

A real world class weight lifter.  But that didn't pay the bills, so he "wrestled."

I watched Memphis, I remember Lawler feuding with Dundee. I actually went to see them live a couple of times. Once it got so bad when Dundee came to the ring with people throwing shiat, that he had to break kayfabe and call his daughter up and ask them to please not throw things because she could be injured , Swear to god. (no, I dont know if it was really his daughter, but he did break KAYFABE AND SAY THAT TO KEEP THE FANS FROM THROWING shiat DURING HIS MATCH WITH LAWLER.)

/sorry about the caps lock, not going back to fix it.

Story goes Stu Hart really wanted to bring him to the Dungeon early in his career.  Would have been something else watching Bruno work Stampede style.

Bruno Sammartino? I preferred Ivan Putski, the Polish Hammer.

Always the one knock (of many) I have against Vince:  If he wants a "G" rated wrestling product, all he has to do is watch all of the Southern promotions.  They made much money pushing angles without people rolling their eyes at it.

/HHH is doing it at nXt
//It's why nXt > anything else WWE.
