Well that was a load of garbage.

That said, Tarantino likely helped popularise the technique in more recent times.

No. This is an age old technique that goes all the way back to Mozart's "Don Giovanni." People have been doing this for hundreds of years in various art forms that have non-diegetic music. And it's happened all throughout film history.

"Reservoir Dogs is a fantastic example of the concept of synergy, whereby the film becomes a platform for selling other things - the soundtrack, posters, action figures."

Ok, this person is now officially an idiot. Since the advent of talkies musicians have written songs specifically for movies which are then used to help amplify sales of their catalogue as well as upcoming releases.

I knew what it meant, but honestly, I'd probably never use it.  I prefer to eschew obfuscation.

That would have been Tom Lehrer:

"While we're attacking frontally,
Watch Brink-ely and Hunt-ely,
Describing Contrapuntally
The cities we have lost,

No need for you
to miss a minute
of the agonizing Holocaust!

YEEEEAAAAAAHHHH!!!"

Kuta: Yeah, but Guardians of the Galaxy sucked, while Reservoir Dogs and Baby Driver were good movies made by good directors

Iconic soundtrack, but it owes a lot to the decision to include the Steven Wright radio dj voice-over to have made it work, thematically, without being distracting.

Zack Snyder tends to use a lot of cool songs, but is way too aware of itself, and brings the viewer out of it.

CarnySaur: Oh, I'm sure some commenters will say they already know what contrapuntal means because they read books and nobody else does.

I read books *and* music.

You're welcome.

michael madsen was on jay mohr podcast a few years back and told some great anecdotes about Reservoir Dogs and a few other QT films.  he said the "no tipping" speech was written for Harvey Keitel's character.  Keitel spent the night before the shoot memorizing it as QT was still revising the lines.

at the shoot, QT tells Keitel he's taking the speech away and giving it Steve Buscemi of course.  Keitel was upset but went with it.  Buscemi got the lines just moments before shooting and of course nailed it.

QT said, per Madsen, that the speech wasn't right for Keitel's character.  he was the leader, the father figure, and not tipping was something he wouldn't do.  but, buscemi's character was kinda slippery and the speech made sense for his character, hence the switch.
